n Light snow early in the week. Forget it and think of Thanksgiving Day.
n Freighters report some improvements in the Meeker-Rifle road.
n The average daily attendance at the high school is 40.
n The old Wildhack residence on east Main Street was almost totally destroyed by fire.
n Lost — Between Meeker and 13-mile, black pocket-book, containing check and currency; $10 reward. Finder will please return to this office or to White River Review.

n The Forest Service rented office space in the A. Oldland & Company building.
n Jimmy Ray Purcell and Charles Peterson were seriously injured in a car accident upon returning from Rangely.
n Pat Sheridan was the top football scorer in the league.
n Ruby Proctor became the bride of Freeman Hart. Elaine Eliasen became the bride of Ray Weber. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Rees celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.
n “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” starring Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman and Jack Carson: Nov. 16, 17, 18. Admission 75 cents, 50 cents, 25 cents.

n For the first time, expenditures by Rio Blanco County went over the $10 million mark.
n Tom Pysto, wildlife biologist for C-b on Piceance Creek, was appointed Tuesday night to fill the trustee vacancy of Ray Keller. Pysto was one of four persons considered to fill the vacancy. The others were Lucile Zenor, Jan Hughley and Walt Brown. John Montgomery was named the new county planner.
n Football prom king and queen were Kevin Nye and Kristy Hughes. First attendants were Layne Devish and Troy Brown. Second attendants were Tim McFarland and Dawn Cook.
n Mr. and Mrs. Robert Copeland of Meeker announced the engagement of their daughter Anne to Jim Overton, son of Genevieve Overton of Meeker.

n Mr. and Mrs. Vern Hevner announced the birth of baby girl Dee Ann. Mr. and Mrs. James Barnhart announced the birth of their daughter, Cheryl Lee. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Beeler announced the birth of twins named Cynthia and Douglas.
n A Beta Zeta chapter of ESA was instituted in Rangely with Ellen Harris installed as president.

n Elbert Concord was named Rangely postmaster. William Elder was employed as a new Rangely Police patrolman.
n A proposal to federally subsidize an oil shale plant in northwestern Colorado would aim at obtaining 250,000 barrels of oil a day. “Oil shale is only one part of the energy situation,” said John C. Whitaker.
n The Campus Theatre was showing “Tom Sawyer”; Clint Eastwood in “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” and Walt Disney’s “Snowball Express.”
n “History keeps repeating itself, because we weren’t listening the first time.”

n The work of the Rangely Police Department in a criminal steroid smuggling investigation and arrest was part of a Wall Street Journal article. Rangely was also supposed to be highlighted by ABC’s 20/20 news program but had to cancel.
n Jeffrey R. Chesani was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps Oct. 10, 1988 upon completion of Officer Candidate School.
n The Rangely Panther football team took to the playoffs, but lost to Ignacio 30-6.
n The Open Hearth donut and sandwich shop at 855 E. Main St.
n New releases at Family Video: “Seventh Sign,” “Biloxi Blues,” “Three Men and a Baby,” “Friday the 13th Part 7.”

Jace Mobley was named Player of the Western Slope League and all-conference, Ryan Sullivan all-conference, Jonathon Fitzgibbons all-conference, Ethan Quinn honorable mention all-conference, Jacob Simonsen honorable mention all conference. Mobley will play in All State games. Coach Klark Kindler was named Western Slope Coach of the Year. Left to right: Bryan Rosas, Simonsen, Quinn, Fitzgibbons, Mobley and Sullivan.

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line.  The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.  See last week’s paper for a list of ways to help or contact the County Weed & Pest District at 970-878-9670 or the Conservation District office at 970-878-9838 with any questions.
