Saturday, April 23, Rangely High School track and field traveled to Rifle for their invitational track meet. Even though the team was not too excited to pull up to the track in cold rainy weather, they still performed well with quite a few athletes earning personal records for the year.
Andrew Morton continues to improve in the high jump each week, jumping 5 feet 11 inches this weekend in the cold. His sister, Marie Morton, is steadily increasing the distance of her throws every meet with a discus throw of 104. Victoria Phelan also had a great weekend as she PR’d in all three of her events: long jump, triple jump, and the 200-meter dash.
Devin Williams also ran an impressive 1600-meter run with a time of 5:03, which is also his PR for the season. Williams also stepped out of his usual comfort zone and substituted for injured Ethan Peacock as the first leg of the 4×100 relay. Williams, Colton Coombs, Connor Phelan, and Cole Barlow performed well in this race finishing with a time of 50.58 seconds.
Cole Barlow is also knocking on the door of the state track meet with quick times in both the 100 dash (11.58) and the 200 dash (24.06). William Scoggins earned a PR in the two-mile run with a time of 11:14.22. Dale Nielsen continues to take time off his mile run gaining a 5:15.83 for another PR.
This upcoming weekend the team will head out for its second overnight trip to a meet in Craig on Friday at Moffat County High School and a Saturday meet at West Grand High School where we hope to have great weather, fast times, both long and high jumps and serious distance on our throws.
