RBC wrestlers hit mats in Denver

RBC — Wrestlers from Meeker and Rangely spent their last weekend of spring break competing in the Rocky Mountain National tournament in Denver.
Three elementary and two middle school wrestlers from Meeker, along with two high school wrestlers from Rangely, entered the national tournament, for the three-day event.
Meeker Elementary School fourth-grader Devon Pontine finished second in the 89-pound weight class. Pontine won three matches, including one pin. T.J. Shelton, also a fourth-grader, won one match, as did third-grader Chase Rule, before they were eliminated.
Barone Middle School eighth-grader Trey Morris won one match in the 102-pound bracket and classmate Ethan Overton competed in the 172-pound bracket but did not win either of his two matches.
“They got to wrestle some different kids and I think they all had fun,” Joe Gutierrez, who helped coach the Meeker wrestlers, said of the experience.
Rangely sophomores Devon Rose, a two-time state placer, including a second place finish last February and Chance Holcomb, who qualified for the state tournament last season, both won four matches. The two Panthers were one match from the medal round.
