RANGELY I Rangely’s high school music program does more than perform for parents. Last week was festival time for the high school band and choir.
On Wednesday, April 12 the band attended the CHSAA Instrumental Large Group Festival at Battle Mountain High School in Edwards, Colo. They were the smallest entry in the competition playing three songs and missing top honors by just one point from one of the three judges.
A judge complimented the band by saying, “There were no slackers because the band is so small. Everyone did their part.”
Participating in the band festival were Samantha Lapp, Elizabeth McCann, Kaylee Mecham, Paityn Myers, Destinee Ortega, Miekka Peck, Aspen Rhea, Moriah Vaughn along with middle school students Rylee Bell, Brent Cantrell, Raiden Ganser, Kyle Hornsby, Madison Lance, Shauna Lapp, Keihlin Myers, Philip Noyes, Mary Scoggins and Timothy Scoggins. Of special note, Kristiana Terry added her bass clarinet as the only sixth-grader in the band.
On the following day five high school choir members attended the CHSAA Vocal Large Group Festival at Glenwood Springs High School. Again the Rangely group was the smallest entry but they sang with great confidence. Only a few of the schools scored higher than Rangely which garnered a 2 in the 1-5 rankings.
Troy Allred, Alexis Wiley, Kayla Packer, Susie Gillard and RaeLynn Norman attended this year’s choir festival.
Music teacher Carol Morton commented “Both of these groups are great students to work with. They are polite and talented and hard working. It’s my privilege to be with them.”
