RHS battles Vernal, Eagle

RANGELY I The Panthers’ cross country team competed in two meets this past weekend with races in Vernal, Utah, as well as Eagle, Colo. On Wednesday, William Scoggins, Mitchell Webber and Chris Hogan made the one hour drive to Vernal to run a late afternoon race where they were the lone school from Colorado as well as the only team in green.
Competing with 166 runners, Scoggins led the way with a third place finish (16:21), Hogan finished in 49th (19:27), and Webber finished in 66th (19:59)
The harriers had to set their alarms early Saturday as they hit the road before 6 a.m. to make the drive to the Eagle Valley Invitational that hosted 14 teams and 122 runners in the boys’ competition.
Scoggins, who was in 11th place at the one mile mark, picked off the lead runners one by one and by mile two was the front runner and finished the race in first place with a time of 16:41, a new course record. Hogan and Webber both had strong races as well with Hogan running a personal best of 19:03, to finish in 27th and Webber knocking two seconds off his best time with a 19:57 finish, earning him 45th place.
The Panthers will be headed to Craig this coming Saturday to participate in the Moffat County Invitational.

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line. The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch. See last week’s paper for a list of ways to help or contact the County Weed & Pest District at 970-878-9670 or the Conservation District office at 970-878-9838 with any questions.
