RANGELY I The Rangely High School boys’ basketball team lost 60-44 to the Little Snake Rattlers but came back and defeated the Plateau Valley Cowboys 48-30 in front of a home crowd.
The Panthers will host Cedaredge on Friday then travel to Hotchkiss for a league game Saturday.
“Our offense executed at a high level at times, and I believe we got closer to finding our identity,” Rangely head coach Jeremy Cantrell said “But we turned the ball over too many times to beat a good team like Baggs.”
Senior Colt Allred led the team with 17 points and he pulled down four rebounds while classmate Mitchell Webber scored 10 points and added eight rebounds. Patrick Scoggins scored nine against the Rattlers while Kelton Elam, Luis Contreras and Layne Mecham each made a basket.
Against the Cowboys, both teams scored 11 points in the first quarter and Rangely scored two more points than Plateau Valley in the second to take a two point led at halftime, before breaking the game open in the third quarter.
“We matched their enthusiasm at home in the first half and then did a great job of executing adjustments in the second half,” coach Cantrell said.
Rangely outscored the Cowboys 16-4 in the third quarter and 8-4 in the fourth to win the game.
Allred again led the Panthers in scoring, this time scoring more than half (26) of his team’s total points and Webber finished with 10 again. Scoggins and Contreras each scored six.
The Panthers will host the league’s No. 1 team, Cedaredge, on Friday.
