RANGELY I The lady Panthers varsity volleyball team won two more league games last weekend and are currently tied for second in the league with Meeker, who they will play Friday before ending the regular season at home against the current league leader Paonia.
Rangely traveled to Hotchkiss last Friday and beat the Bulldogs in three games 25-18, 25-22 and 25-20, then beat Plateau Valley in four games at home Saturday last.
“I thought against Hotchkiss we played well, not just one person but everyone as a whole,” head coach Jimmie Mergelman said. “Last Saturday was parents’ night and I would say that this was not one of our stronger games but we played well enough to pull out a win.”
Quincey Thacker led the team with 12 kills against Hotchkiss, Chelsea Ficken finished with eight, Brittany Babineaux had seven and Carrie Goddard recorded two.
Rangely lost the first game to Plateau Valley at home 27-25 but came back to win three in a row 25-17, 26-24 and 25-20 in front of their parents.
Thacker recored 24 kills in 62 attempts and Babineaux attempted 57 kills and was given credit for 17 against Plateau Valley. Shelby Neiberger, Kelsey Prosser, Goddard and Ficken also recorded kills in 187 attempts in the match.
The lady Panthers currently sport an 11-5 overall record, 8-1 in the league and will play the other two top teams this weekend for seeding in the upcoming district tournament, which will start next week.
“This week we go to Meeker on Friday for the league match up and then host Paonia for our last match on Saturday that is the league matchup as well,” Mergelman said. “This weekend is crucial for us.”
