RHS tracksters earn PRs

This weekend the RHS track and field team traveled to Battle Mountain High School to participate in their second annual Husky track meet. Though the team was short-handed (50 percent of our athletes traveled to Denver to participate in a band competition), the athletes attending performed very well and earned a handful of personal records (PR) for the season.
In the 100 meter dash both Cole Barlow and Colton Coombs earned PR’s with times of 11.95 seconds for Cole and 12 seconds for Colton. Barlow also ran the 400 dash in an impressive 53.49 seconds and earned a PR in the 200 dash with a time of 23.9 seconds.
William Scoggins ran his fastest mile and two-mile of the year at 5:01.92 in the mile and 11:10.56 in the two-mile. He took third in both events. Hopefully we will see him in the four-minute range this coming weekend for the mile.
Sisters PJ and Leslie Hernandez both had PRs in the 200, as Leslie clocked in at 33.54  with her sister, PJ, close on her tail with a time of 34.81 seconds. PJ also threw her furthest discus of the year with a distance of 71 feet 3 inches.
Even after being injured the majority of the season, athlete Jake Smith threw both the shot put and the discus very well with distances of 33-3 in the shot put and 98-2 in the discus. Both of Jake’s throws were personal records for him this season.
Marie Morton took fourth overall in the female discus, with a throw of 93 feet.
“The majority of our athletes are continually improving in their events week by week,” head coach Stephanie Kahler said. “We hope they reach their peaks this weekend as we head to our regional qualifier in Grand Junction on Friday. Good luck Panthers!”
