Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
• Those who have used it say we have the best forging coal in the state. Mr. F. N. Johantgen considers it is the best coal for fine work he has ever used. It is his No. 1 welding coal and he has never handled better for all blacksmithing purposes.
• The little bit of nasty weather in the fore part of the week gave way, Thursday, to a streak of beautiful Indian summer weather, which is just liable, in this latitude, to continue until the advent of the new year.
• Robert Metzger, brother of Mr. Otto Metzger, is down from Leadville on a short visit. Mr. Metzger has a fine ranch on the Mesa on which he is spending a good deal of money in improving, and before another year rolls by expects to have his outside business in such shape that he can turn his attention exclusively to the ranch.

• Mrs. Mildred Watson left for Denver first of the week. She returned to Meeker on Wednesday bringing with her two new 1939 Fords, which will be on display at the Joy Motor Co. Ford has added a new line of cars this year and also made many improvements in the low-priced Ford line.
• County agent and Mrs. Sprengle spent several days in Denver this week, where Mr. Sprengle attended to business matters pertaining to his county agent’s office.
• Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Arnold arrived home last Thursday after a month’s trip east. Most of the time was spent with their son, Royce, and his family in Sharon Springs, Penn., but they went on east to their old home in Vermont before returning to Meeker. They report a wonderful trip, which they enjoyed a lot.

• Rev. Richard Gilbert of Denver was the Saturday overnight guest of Pastor Ken Scroggins and family. Rev. Gilbert was here to assist with the United Methodist Church charge conference meeting held Sunday afternoon. He also delivered the sermon at the morning worship service.
• Bernece Anderson, who has been with her daughter, Helen, in Denver while recuperating from major surgery, was returned home Friday afternoon of last week. Tomorrow, Friday, her son, Raymond, of Firestone, will arrive and take her to Grand Junction. On Monday of next week, she will be undergoing the second of a two-part surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital.
• Lee Davis, who fell 30 feet from a rig he was working on in Evanston, Wyo., and who received a crushed wrist and two broken vertebrae, has been released from the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, and returned to his Wyoming home. Unable to set the wrist, Lee remains under observation with his Salt Lake City physician. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Davis of Meeker.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• Mr. and Mrs. Jim Younker returned from Ione, Calif., on Oct. 14. They were in California visiting with their new granddaughter. Named Robin Denese Grim, the granddaughter was born Sept. 28 at 9:30 a.m. and weighed 6 lbs. 14 oz. She’s the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Grim. Mrs. Grim is the former Mary Lue Younker.
• Mr. Stanley Smith, son of Mrs. Frank Mead, is now employed in Rangely. Mr. Smith, who comes from Los Angeles, Calif., is making his home for the present with his mother and Mr. Mead.
• Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Young and Mrs. Kathryn Collier left from Wyoming to visit friends. Mr. and Mrs. Young plan to visit the Lauderdales in Evanston. Mrs. Collier will visit the John Smiths and the Lester Kerrs in Granger and also a friend at Little America, where she worked for a long time.

Rangely Times — 40 years ago
• Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Sullivan left today for a two-week vacation. First, they’re going to Grand Junction, then on to Nucla to visit with Russ and Sheila Sullivan. Russ is their son, and both he and his wife are teachers in Nucla.
• Mr. and Mrs. Garret Eckerdt are now back home after attending the wedding of her sister. Mrs. Irene Hanser, to Harold Portschy in Herdon, Kan. On the way home, they stopped off in Denver and visited with their sons, Butch and Tim.
• Mrs. Eldon Reeves is home from Austin, Texas. She came back in September after having spent four and a half months with her daughter, Carolyn Duke, who was ill and in the hospital. She seems all right now and sends her thanks to the many people for their prayers and the many cards that were sent.

Rangely Times — 30 years ago
• Dale and Janet Howard are pleased to announce a very welcome addition to their family. Ryan James was born on Nov. 3, 1983, at 10:45 p.m. in the Rangely District Hospital. Ryan was 19-inches long and weighed in at 7 lbs., 15 1/4 ounces, and was delivered by Dr. Schumacher.
• Halloween Spelling Wizards Sunny Young, Laci Brady, Mike Jordan and Clint Eddy took the top honors in the annual third grade Halloween spelling bee. Twenty-one finalists competed in the final bee on Oct. 28.
