Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• Front page headline: “Little interest shown locally in N.W. Junior college.”
• Miss Donna Seger of Calhan, Colo., and Joe Collins of Meeker, Colo., exchanged wedding promises at 8 p.m. Saturday night, Sept. 5th, 1959.
• “About half the people of the world are busy trying to direct the lives of the other half.”
• Meet Gabby Picone: Gaspare Picone is Meeker Elementary School’s physical education instructor. Gabby teaches almost 400 elementary children the principles and fundamentals of games, health, play and physical skills each day.
• The Meeker High School band will present the first half-time show of the football season during the Meeker-Glenwood football game. Director Dale Jens and the band have planned a show called the “Satellite Story,” which they think will be “out of this world.”
• A 30-yard pass from quarterback Tom George to halfback Pat Sheridan took the ball to the Green River 5. Fred Oglesby then went to the 1 and George smacked it over from there on a quarterback sneak.

• Front page headline: “It’s trucks like this carrying big, wide loads that has the Rio Blanco County Commissioners concerned about the condition of Highway 64 between Meeker and Rangely.”
• Local rancher Sam Love closed on the paperwork involved in the sale of the Cross L Ranch west of Meeker. Along with the announced closing, Love also set the record straight as to what he offered the historical society, which originally wanted to purchase 70 acres around the Meeker Massacre site.
• Winners of the “catch a kid being good contest” were: Amanda Dare, Gabe Dade, Boyd Boren, Rachael Howard, Marie McCoy, Isaac Madison, Tatton Suter, Shane Stout, Becky Taussig and Vanessa Thrash.
• Usually she’s a setter, but Meeker’s Carol Lynn Whiteman enjoys spiking the ball as much as anyone when she gets a chance.
• Led by the strong defensive play of Heather Merriam and Karrin Borchard, Meeker won all three matches in just two games apiece.

The Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• Most local graduates will attend Mesa College.
• Suzie Hilkey was the Rangely High School homecoming queen, and her attendants were Barbara Carmickle, Karen White, Cherry Brown and Vicky McCoy.
• At Nichols Store: Jif peanut butter, 12 oz. jar for 41 cents.
• At the Rig Theatre: James “Maverick” Garner in “Up Periscope.”
• Mr. and Mrs. J.V. Tynes of Rangely announce the engagement of their daughter Junie to Larry Striegel, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Striegel. Junie will graduate from Rangely High School this year. Larry graduated from Rangely High School last year and is attending Mesa College this year.
• Doug Hall rousted out Bill Russell for lineman of the week honors by his starting play in the middle of the Panther forward wall.

The Rangely Times — 20 years ago
• Rangely police officers began developing intelligence information that psilocybin, a very strong hallucinogen, had begun surfacing in Rangely.
• CNCC welcomed Jim Page, also known as J.P., to the Aviation Flight Technology Department.
• A recent study revealed that 88 percent of Americans regularly shop at convenience stores, and 69 percent live within one mile of a convenience store.
• Varsity RHS football defeated Meeker by a score of 34-0. Brett McElvain, Jose Lopez and Daniel Hefley led the Panthers on offense, with Shane Aplanalp, “Soupy” Campbell and Brad Rouse leading the defense.
• Rangely teacher Glenn Rex died of a heart attack in California four days after being diagnosed with leukemia.
• At Bestway, Jif 18 oz. peanut butter, $1.99.
