Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald – 50 years ago
• A plane crash on Big Beaver killed Craig businessman Miles Barrett, and critically injured pilot Arthur C. Smith, also from Craig. It was thought the men in the plane were preparing to drop a note to hunters in a camp on the old Zeb Wise homestead above the Livingston place.
• The rural fire department was called to the Buford Store. It seems that someone had dumped some gasoline some distance from the gas pumps, but had been using a leaky pail, leaving a little gas all along the route. Somehow the gas was set afire. They were able to control the fire.
• Phillips Petroleum announced plans to drill another test well in Powell Park.
• At the Rio Theatre: ìThe Hangmanî starring Robert Taylor; ìHouseboatî starring Cary Grant and Sophia Loren; and ìSaga of Hemp Brownî staring Rory Calhoun.
• Mrs. Morris Amick drove over to Glenwood Springs on Wednesday of this week taking her son Bob over for a medical check-up.
• There has been no storm the past week but for several days it has been cloudy and threatening. The high temperature for the week was 72, which is nice and warm for October and the low was 18.

The Meeker Herald – 20 years ago
• Homecoming Queen Sonja Hefton and King John Batka were selected to reign over the homecoming festivities this year. First attendants were Rowdy Atwood and Heather Merriam. Nita Rust and Bobby Shelton were second attendants. Crown bearers were Casey Sullivan and Allison Hall.
• Heart attacks claimed two hunters as the animals went into hiding during the second season.
• Saturday’s football game with Walden was canceled due to injuries.
• Meeker Sand and Gravel announced that it will no longer be selling stoker or lump coal.
• The winners of the Boots Up jack-o-lantern contest were honored with prizes: Nicki LeBlanc, Rhawnie Willey, Tanisha Gates, Michelle Griffin and Alex Raley.

The Rangely Times – 50 years ago
• The Panthers were undefeated in league play for football.
• Hunting fatalities mounted with the deaths of three hunters to gunshot wounds, three others dead from heart attacks and three more wounded.
• Phillip Smith and Donald Ishan were charged with burglarizing the Snak Bar and Gusher Liquor Store Oct. 10.
• Ernest J. Ballard was named manager of Moon Lake Electric.
• An important meeting of Rangely TV owners was scheduled. All television set owners were urged to attend.
• Looking at the new compact car models, we have an idea that should increase the sales. Attach a revolving blade under the body and use it to mow the lawn.
• Playing at the Rig Theatre: ìThe Sound and the Furyî starring Yul Brynner and Joanne Woodward; ìDon’t Give Up the Shipî starring Jerry Lewis.

The Rangely Times – 20 years ago
• The whys and wherefores for public radio in Rangely were presented the monthly luncheon meeting of the Rangely Chamber of Commerce by Monte Perschon, director of development for KPRN.
• Tall tales, bold lies and other hunting stories can be heard at the meadow next to the Rangely Motor Hotel and the trailer park at the east end of town.
• Mark Mascarenas joined CNCC at the beginning of the academic year as the new wrestling coach and supplemental services specialist.
• RHS boys cross country team third at district, qualifies for state. Leading the way was senior Andrew Crookston.
• Rangely homecoming royalty: Queen Karen Bosch and King Jerramie Bell. Crown bearers, Jane and John Suchar.
