• The coal dealers are happy these days, 18 degrees below zero!
• Frank E. Sheridan delivered the sheriff’s key (of Garfield) to Mr. Thomas, his successor.
• John Goff killed a monstrous mountain lion Saturday. It measured 8 ft., 6 in., from tip to toe.
• James Joe Fanda, better known as “China Jim” left Meeker last Monday via New Castle stage. He is going to the land of his birth and get a wife of his own if all goes well.

• The highway department increased the speed limit between Meeker and Rifle to 70 mph in certain sections.
• January started with a spell of sub-zero weather, 17 below.
• At Russell Drugs: Lysol, large size, 99 cents. Dex-a-Diet, 98 cents. 10 Gillette Super Blue Blades, 69 cents.
• Meeker edged Rifle 27-21 in a northwestern mat clash. Wrestling for Meeker’s winning team: Jerry Seely, Fred Gert, Tom Raley, Jerry Purcell, Myron Dull, Tom Pilkington, Harry Tucker, John Rector, Ray McKee, Raymond Devereaux, Owen Slack, John Devereaux, Butch Proctor, Dick George, Reilly Hopson, Pat Sheridan, Walt Brown, Bruce Clapper and Frank Brenton.
• Mr. Guy Stealey, weather reporter for the Marvine district, reported 11.3 inches of snowfall in December. The highest temperature for the month was 55 degrees and the low was seven below zero.

• The county’s first-ever snowmobile fatality was William D. Hollenbaugh, 35, of Rangely.
• Winter clearance sale at Trendy Togs Apparel and Tanning Center.
• Mary Ann and John Copeland had a wonderful Christmas vacation in Oklahoma. Mary Ann’s granddaughter, Kacie Lynn, born to Kelly and John Watson, in Temple, Okla., is the 61st great-grandchild of Meeker’s Daisy Cook.
• Joe Rippy was the lucky winner of Valley Grocery’s recent drawing for a BMX bike. The son of Diane Rippy, Joe is a kindergartner and received the bicycle just two days before Christmas.
