Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
• The cattle business has been very quiet this past two week, but building has been very active. The week closes with six buildings in the process of erection.
• Those in favor of incorporation carried the day last Monday. The vote stood in favor of incorporation, 36; against, 9.
• J.W. Hugus & Co. received an immense quantity of goods this week — they now have a stock that would do credit to some of the big Denver houses.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• Two hunters die from heart attacks; one hunter wounded.
• First snow storm of season blanketed Meeker with about 2 inches of snow on Friday.
• The White River Valley swarming with extra big crop of hunters. Meeker like little city as hunters arrive.
• Mary Ann Conrado, a senior at Meeker High School, was elected homecoming queen for 1960. Lewis Anderson was crowned homecoming king.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
• Meeker firemen were quick to respond to a fire at John Boydstun’s Water Street home last week. John and his wife were away hunting when the fire broke out in the coal furnace and hot water heating system.
• Trava Raisor has been hired as the new director of the Economic Development Corporation.
• Mr. and Mrs. Della Gibson of Fort Collins announce the engagement of their daughter, Donna Rose, to Joe Gutierrez, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Gutierrez of Meeker.
• Christopher Viscardi, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Viscardi, turned 1-year-old on Oct. 28, 1985.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• Funeral services were held for James D. Kenney, 17, who died in a one-car accident 18 miles east of Rangely on Colorado Highway 64.
• George Richard Greenbank, 13, was recovering from a bullet wound to the chest suffered during target practice when two friends fired into the air. It is believed the bullet was dropping down when it struck Greenbank in the chest, lodging in his heart.
• For the first time in Panther history, they stopped the Meeker Cowboys, along with vaunted Fred Oglesby, 33-0 Friday night at Meeker. Co-captains Ross Schmid and John Justus, along with Dave Zeigler and Dave Rice, received MVP awards after the game.

Rangely Times — 30 years ago
• Bill Parker turned in his letter of resignation to the Rangely Town Council.
• Navy Operations Specialist Seaman Apprentice Floyd E. Mesler, son of Floyd E. Mesler of Dinosaur, Colo., has returned from a deployment in the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean.
• At the Campus Theatre: “Caddyshack” staring Chevy Chase and Bill Murray.
