Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
• We take the pleasure of announcing to the public that J.W. Hugus & Co. will, on or about the first of December, open a bank in Meeker.
• Otto Metzger and Baron Rothchild arrived from Leadville. Mr. Metzger is here to stay and the baron to size up the country.
• H.H. Leonard on the old government road has built and addition to his house. Leonard’s now a first rate stopping place.
• The gentlemen listed below will take an active part in handling our county affairs for next year at least: James C. Kendall, sheriff; Reuben Oldland, clerk and recorder; J.T. McLean, treasurer; A.J. Gregory, county commissioner; D.K. Van Cleef, assessor.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• John Kennedy was elected president in a close race. While the nation was electing a Democratic president, Colorado moved to the Republican column, voting for Richard Nixon, Republican candidate.
• Ivo Shults and William Murray were elected to fill county commissioner seats for Rio Blanco County.
• Mrs. Georgia Franklin was honored at a tea given by the Meeker Elementary School staff to celebrate her recent marriage.
• The Meeker Bible church will have a revival at their church starting on Monday of next week. Evangelist Ken Hasper will be in Meeker to head the special services which will extend over two weeks.

• The most recent monthly retail sales figures indicate Meeker’s economy is on a relatively flat plain.
• Rio Blanco County Sheriff Ron Hilkey and Deputy Pete Larson rescued two hunters stranded in deep snow at the head of West Miller Creek last week.
• Following last week’s most successful play (Our Town—Meeker) and potluck, Meeker’s Centennial Celebration came to a close.
• Happy first birthday to Jessica Lynn Hilkey, daughter of Troy and Rhonda.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• Marriage vows were exchanged between Miss Gwendolyn June Tynes and Mr. Larry Wade Striegel, Oct. 29, 1960 at the First Baptist Church of Rangely.
• From the editor’s desk: “With the election over partisan differences among us must be put aside as we now approach the real crisis in our history — the struggle for survival against those who would lead us down the road to bankruptcy, even as they broadcast their illusory platitudes about the need for “moving ahead” by artificial “growth” to achieve “national purpose.” We can only hope that the conservatives of both parties…will work together to save this country from financial chaos and defeat in the “cold war.”

• The first shale oil from Federal Prototype Oil Shale Tract C-a us expected to be pumped to the surface some time this week.
• Jazzercise classes at the Rangely Recreation Center. “A wild and woolly approach to body conditioning using joyful jazz dance movements and swinging music.”

Rangely Times — 20 years ago
• State Rep. Scott McInnis was unanimously elected last Thursday by his Colorado House colleagues as House majority leader.
• Vickie Claybaugh and Charles E. (Butch) Elliot which to announce the engagement of their daughter Marjorie Myone to John Philip Widmer, son of H. Philip and Barbara Widmer.
• Jeff and Leann Geschwentner had tickets to “The Price is Right” during their vacation and were the winners of a new car.
