Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
• The Meeker school opened Nov. 2 with an attendance of 30. The expected books have not yet arrived.
• The bar attached to the Pioneer Hotel is a model of neatness and beauty. Jesse Black will preside behind the mahogany.
• The mortality among young children has been severe lately. The latest death was that of Owen O. Jones’ baby, which occurred early in the week.
• “Pop” Rice of North Park arrived in Meeker Thursday. “Pop” will winter with us and retail White River water to the denizens of Meeker at 25 cents a barrel.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• On Sunday, Nov. 14, a little after 7 o’clock, the entire town of Meeker was shaken by what sounded like a huge explosion. There was no explanation, so the only answer that anyone has is that a jet airplane was flying over Meeker and broke the sound barrier.
• Elliot Roosevelt confirmed his plans for a private White River resort, the All Seasons Club, to be built 22 miles east of Meeker, to include a 150-room hotel, an 18-hole golf course, a ski lift, a stable, outdoor ice skating rink, swimming pool, tennis courts and a guide service for hunters.
• Tommy Raley has what may be a record elk head, with a 50 inch spread and antlers that are 12 inches in circumference at the base.

• Despite last-minute attempts to recapitalize the Meeker Industrial Bank, the State Banking Commission took possession of the bank last Friday. It was not the kind of economic news the community needed this close to Christmas.
• The Meeker School Board is looking into a four-day school week program.
• Although it’s only the third week in November, Meeker has already had 2-1/2 feet of snow this month. The temperature has dropped drastically as well, with a low of 7 degrees recorded Tuesday night.
• Miss Bernada Johnson is a finalist in the Miss Colorado Teenager Pageant. Johnson, 17, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Berlyn Johnson.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• A state health official has reminded us not to slack up on providing protective polio shots for those needing them.
• According to the Chamber of Commerce of the United States, the national debt, which now exceeds $290 billion, exceeds the combined debt of all other nations in the world by $47 billion.
• Mrs. Harry Orr of Orr’s Cafe was forced to hand over $35 from her cash register last Monday night when a man came in and told her to hand over the cash.

Rangely Times — 30 years ago
• Mountain Bell offers Christmas calling service beginning Nov. 28. “Call Santa” is a recorded message on which Santa Claus describes the ways children around the world celebrate Christmas. Outside the Denver free-calling area, the call is 20 cents plus long-distance.
• The Rangely Town Council passed a resolution supporting the Deserado coal mine.
• RBC Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspected murder-suicide. The body of Charles Cose, 32, was found with a gunshot wound to the midsection, along with the body of Clifford Pennell, 40, with a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.
