Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
• Have your order filled by 11 a.m. Thanksgiving Day as the stores will be closed at that hour.
• There will be a citizens’ meeting Monday at the post office, for the purpose of nominating candidates for mayor and trustees.
• Next Thursday will witness the opening of our dancing and social season in Meeker and the new town hall. The opening hop promises to be a grand affair. Mr. Major has had a force of men at work during the week and everything will be complete with the exception of the ladies cloak room.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• Jr. High Honor Roll: Seventh grade — Jim Brown, Karen Joslin. Eighth grade — Daryl LeFevre, Gene Starbuck, Reynard Roberts, Doris Anderson, Roberta Long, Rosemary Mannel, Jody Moody, Sharon Murray and Laurie Steen.
• Work on the new White River Electric building is moving along rapidly.
• The weather the past week has been mostly sunny and delightful for this time of year. The nights have been chilly but not extremely cold. The high for the week was 55 and the low 8 above. As we go to press it is overcast.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
• Piceance Creek sheepowner Larry Robinson lost 178 sheep to an accident with a semi truck. The sheep had wandered out of their overnight, fenced pasture onto Hwy. 64 when the semi came through about 3:30 a.m.
• The Piceance Creek Community Building was dedicated last Wednesday.
• New books in at the Meeker Library to note: “The Mammoth Hunters,” by Jean M. Auel and “The Polar Express” by Chris Van Allsberg.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• W.F. (Joe) McCoy presented the keys to a 1961 Hondorus red, Bel Air Chevrolet to Rangely High School principal James Bosley recently for use as a driver-education car this year.
• From The RHS Partyline by Pam Stewart: “If you kicked every person who caused your troubles, you wouldn’t be able to sit down for six months.”
• The Rangely Southern Baptist Church had a record attendance of 111 in Sunday School, and the largest church dinner in the history of the church.

Rangely Times — 30 years ago
• Holly Ann Day and Martin Dean Talbott were united in marriage Nov. 1, 1980, in the Rangely Christian Church.
• Laurel Kubin will present a microwave oven class on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at Donnell’s Electric.

Rangely Times — 20 years ago
• The members of Bible Baptist Church would like to welcome their new pastor, Joe Sparks, and his wife, Becky, and their daughters, Michelle (10) and Jodi (8).
• RHS wrestlers will start their season at Soroco Saturday.
• In a recent report (1989) it was stated that children are flabbier, slower, and more sedentary now than 10 years ago.
