Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
• The city election passed off quietly and resulted in the election of the following gentlemen who will form our city government until next April when the regular elections occur. Mayor W. H. Clark, trustees J.L. McHatton, G.S. Allsebrook, James Lyttle, Charles Atix and T.J. Little.
• To say that the inaugural ball was a success would be putting it very mildly. The attendance was very large considering the bad state of the weather in the early part of the evening.
• Mr. and Mrs. N. Major delightfully entertained a number of their friends at dinner on Thanksgiving Day. Covers were laid for 20 guests. The menu was printed on blue satin.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• Forrest Nelson of Meeker accepted the championship sheep showman award at the conclusion of the Little National Western Livestock Show and CSU. Nelson is a CSU freshman.
• The first touch of below-zero weather hit Meeker this week when the government thermometer registered 4 below on Monday morning.
• MHS news editors Laurie Steen and Kathy Holland spent time watching students pass waste paper that was planted in the halls to see if students took pride in their building. A total of 152 students passed by the paper. Finally, Joe Sullivan, a seventh-grader, picked the paper up and disposed of it. Mr. Barone and Mr. Kemper wish to express a special congratulation to Joe for his thoughtfulness.

• Meeker’s Town Council unanimously selected Joe Collins to fill a vacancy left by member Bill Zobel.
• From the editor’s desk: “You’ve got to hand it to Mayor Gus Halandras. The man has been working his tail off in an attempt to bring growth to Meeker. Although Gus hasn’t hit a winner yet, he remains optimistic that something will turn up and we like that quality in a mayor.
• Rio Blanco County Commissioner Allan Jones was named “Commissioner of the Year” by his fellow commissioners from around the state.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• Mrs. O.M. Ralph has been employed as the town librarian, replacing Mrs. Mason Brown who resigned Nov. 30.
• “Both better than ever: The new 50-star flag and United States savings bonds.”
• Army PFC Lloyd Gardner, a graduate of Rangely High School, recently participated with the 1st Division’s 8th Calvary in Exercise Yellow Jacket II in Korea.
• The Boy Scouts sold 400 dozen doughnuts last week in their annual fund raising campaign.

Rangely Times — 30 years ago
• Ryan Cook, son of John and Lonnie Cook, is the winner of Rangely’s second annual Beautiful Baby Contest.
• “Mitigate the Impact, Article IV: Rangely’s Schools, Can They Cope With Growth?”
• Holly Ann Day and Martin Dean Talbott were united in marriage on Nov. 1 in the Rangely Christian Church.

Rangely Times — 20 years ago
• We must be aware that more so than most years there are rumors of war. And these rumors of war may directly affect many of our younger citizens of Rangely. Thus, it is a time to remember those who are serving our country overseas or soon will be — especially those who will be or are stationed in the Middle East: Eric John Lane, Jeremy Lancaster, Derrin Noel, Claude Rose, Jeffrey Chessani, Conni Crook, Mike King, Corky Powell.
• The First Baptist Church of Rangely, otherwise known as the community church, welcomed David P. Morton as its new pastor on Sunday.
