  • Yesterday was Groundhog Day and he saw his shadow in these parts. Make your own deductions.
  • Frank Sheridan says he is always a victim of hard luck. He was just about to send for “Fatty” Randall to pick the banjo for the pioneers when word comes that Fatty had shuffled off this mortal coil in a Nevada mining camp.
  • At the annual meeting of the stockholders of the Highland Cemetery association, the following officers were elected: F.E. Sheridan, president; H.A. Wildhack, vice president; A.C. Moulton, secretary; F.N. JoHantgen, secretary.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago

  • Leonard J. Raineiri was sentenced to the state penitentiary for 3-5 years. Raineiri was arrested by Marshal Sam Cron when Meeker’s city marshal found a footprint in the snow on Main Street which matched the footprints found at the Meeker High School after the school was broken into during the Christmas holidays.
  • The Feb. 1 snow course readings for the upper White River were made this week and were 17 percent over the average with 40.1 inches of snow on the Rio Blanco ranch course with a water content of 11.6 inches.
  • Mr. Bob Gutierrez has purchased the old Rigby property on the corner of Eighth and Park streets. This property was sold more than a year ago by Mrs. Agnes Fredericks to Vern Davis. Mr. Davis has now sold his interest in the property to Mr. Gutierrez who will be moving his family into his newly acquired home.
  • Tom Pilkington recorded the only victory by a pin against Grand Junction, but George Nay, Bob Ruckman, Mark Sheridan, John Devereaux, Harry Tucker and Ray McKee all recorded decisions.

  • Kathleen Sullivan Kelley, lifelong Rio Blanco County resident, delivered the keynote address at the White River Soil Conservation District dinner and dance.
  • Mrs. Mary Villa, elementary and junior high music instructor, was honored last Friday evening when she was inducted into the international bandmaster fraternity Phi Beta Mu.
  • “Happy 21st birthday, Regas!”
  • The Cowboy’s freshman 112-pounder, J.C. Watt, has gained considerable mat experience this year and enjoyed a good weekend by winning both of his matches.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago

  • All Rangely canines must be licensed, says the town council.
  • William McDaniel was named “outstanding educator of the year” by the Jaycees at their annual banquest. He had been a member of the Rangely public school staff for six years.
  • The Panther wrestling team defeated Glenwood Springs 39-3 in a conference meet there Saturday night.
  •  Friday morning RHS teachers and students entered the building to find a dozen loose chickens roaming the halls. The birds were finally caught, but not before they had done some damage. It must be an early rash of spring fever.

  • Chief of Police Elliot Burke reports that two subjects were apprehended early Sunday morning for investigation of burglary and theft of the Korner Drug Store and Mr. “S” clothing store.
  • In the key match of Friday’s meets Jody Lee lost a very controversial bout to Rifle’s Ray Harper, 4-3.
  • At Bestway: Avocados, 10 cents each.
