Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago
n Some things smell worse the more you stir them. One of these is a polecat, another is a neighborhood quarrel. The polecat you may sometimes have to tackle; but steer clear of the other thing if you have to run for dear life.
n The weather was winterish all week. Also freakish. Snow, rain, hail and cold being the features. It was the hardest of the winter on the stock as the March winds and mud combined to knock the tallow off them, but the outlook for the coming week is good.
n The St. Patrick’s dance given under the auspices of the Catholic Ladies society last Friday evening was largely attended and enjoyed by all present.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
n The state’s water supply outlook, based on snowpack measurements, is the best since 1957.
n The Rio Blanco County spelling bee will be held Friday. From the Meeker junior high school, Tommy Steen, Steve Brubaker, Caroline Taussig and Kathy Conrado will compete. From the Piceance Creek elementary school, Alice Martin, Ceri Taylor, Billie Spence, Susie Romersberger, Marjorie Gutierrez and Phillip Jensen.
n Pioneers Hospital is this month celebrating the first anniversary of the opening of the Walbridge Nursing Home Wing of our county hospital. Mrs. Jennie LaKamp, also a pioneer of this community, was the first person to move into the nursing home.
n Rev. and Mrs. R.I. Wynkoop have recently acceted the pastorate of the Assembly of God church in Meeker.
n Marine Pvt. James P. Sheridan, son of Mr. and Mrs. James F. Sheridan of Meeker, completed recruit training March 15 at the Marine Corps recruit depot at San Diego.
n The Meeker Cowboy 1962 district tournament team: Bob Bloomfield, Ken Johnson, Gus Anderson, John Stephenson, Kip Irwin, Ellis Eliasen, Richard Amick, Jim Kirkpatrick, John Almgren, Larry Ridgeway and coach Gary Eyre.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
n Retired MHS coach Paul Starbuck was inducted in the Colorado Coaches’ Hall of Fame.
n Although only 31 people responded to the recreation district’s requisition to make their opinions known on what the fate of the swimming pool should be, a majority of the responses indicate that the public would like to see the pool enclosed.
n Meeting the necessary requirements and having at least 50 signatures on their petition list to run for the school board are Kris Borchard, Marilyn Osse, Diana Tobin, Gerald LaBonte, Steve Gianinetti, Barbara Rehborg, Ralph Teller, Ed Coryell, Harry Watt and Linda Jones.
n Members of the Catholic church served more than 300 hungry citizen’s a St. Patrick’s Day chicken and noodle dinner.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago
n A reminder to attend the Easter Sunrise Services comes in the form of a good turn done by these members of Boy Scout Troop 188. The cross at the site of the services was recovered and set back in place by Bob Pidcock, Jim Mitchem, Bob Muller and Kelvin White.
n To get maximum attention, it’s hard to beat a good, big mistake.
n A double feature at the Campus Theatre featuring Elvis Presley in “Girls! Girls! Girls!” and “Fun in Acapulco.” Also showing: Frank Sinatra in “Assault on a Queen” and Marlon Brando in “The Appaloosa.”
n The forthcoming marriage of Miss Joyce Blevins and Jim McPhail is being announced by her sister, Mrs. Kenneth Dotson of Rangely.
n Bob Plant named 1967 Northwest League AA Coach of the Year by the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel.
n Two unidentified flying objects were observed here Sunday night about 10:15 p.m. They were described by Mrs. Jack Herman as two floating objects, high in the sky, moving eastward. Mrs. Herman said they were not lighted and did not resemble planes or other identifiable things. They were also seen by a relative of Mrs. Herman at the same time.

Rangely Times — 35 years ago
n “Of all the many myths surrounding taxation policies, one of the more injurious to the nation’s economic health is the mistaken idea that taxing business is somehow different from taxing individuals.”
n Mr. and Mrs. C. Harry Hill of Rangely announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Kathy Ellen, to Bruce A. Nay of Vernal, Utah.
n Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hefley announce the birth of a son born March 9. His name is Jed Michael and he weighed 6 lbs. 6 oz. and was 19 inches long.

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line. The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.
