Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
Joe Rooney returned to Meeker Tuesday and didn’t bring the bride with him. Joe has not only “flimflammed” us once more, but threatens to sue The Herald for $100,000 damages. We welcome the suit, as then we will make Joe tell why the Missouri girl went back on him.
The stage turned over in front of the post office as it was about to start out Wednesday morning. Mrs. Raymond Sykes and a traveling man received slight bruises. The accident was caused by a top-heavy load and too sharp a turn.
Rev. Bacon is home from his missionary trip to lower Yampa river pints, and will hold services at St. James Church tomorrow at the usual hours.

Forrest Nelson and Elbert Jacobs were respectively named as publicity chairman and program chairman for the 1962 College Days celebration.
William Murray of the Coal Creek School won the oratorical contest and Joyce Story of Meeker won the spelling contest. These two bright pupils go to Denver to take part in the state contest. We hope they bring back the honors.
There was a nice crowd last week at Avery’s Anniversary Sale. The prize winners at the sale were Helen Offerle, who won a full year’s supply of Exquisite Form bras; Goldie Richardson was the winner of a two-year supply of the same company bras.

Nina Mintz received the Woman of the Year award at the United Methodist Mother/Daughter banquet.
Mike and Mary Washburn are the proud parents of a new baby daughter born April 30 at 1:30 p.m. in Pioneers Hospital. She weighed 5 pounds 3 1/2, measured 18 1/2 inches in length and has been named Sarah Jane Washburn.

Mr. and Mrs. Lyle D. Anthony wish to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Terry Jolene, to Mr. James A. Fullenwider.
Cheerleader elections were held last Thursday for next year. Chosen were Dede Schumacher, Linda Sutton, Ellen Edwards, Sarah Liles, Mary Lou Gabriel, Katy Yeager, and a very excited Cindy Clair.

Retail trade sales in Rangely totaled $1,461,000, up 37.1 percent for the fourth quarter of 1976.
The weather: May 1, 1976, high temperature 78, low temperature 40.
Will Geer, better known as the Grandpa on the award-winning series, “The Waltons,” will perform in Rangley as part of a two-man celebration of the American artist titled “An Evening of Americana.”

On Monday it was announced that the CNCC wrestlers were the number one academic wrestling team in the nation. CNCC also led the nation in academic all-Americans with 10 individuals earning these honored awards.
Don Chism is returning to Lake Powell this week where he will enjoy fishing again. He said Lois has too much work for him here at the Drive-In. Good luck, Don.
There are five people vying for an expired seat on the Rangely Board of Trustees. They are Dave Chaney, Billy Estes, Grant Moyers, Dan Simon and Phil Smith.
