The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
n Perry Spurlock has received his fine passenger auto.
n The marshal has the authority to arrest all chickens running at large. Ours are penned.
n The Hugus company has added another store to their string, having purchased the Goodrich store at Eagle in Eagle County.
n At the school election Monday, Mr. Reuben Oldland was elected to succeed himself as treasurer.
n The people of Ashley Valley and the Vernal Express are pulling hard for the routing of the proposed Trans-Continental Automobile Highway by way of Rifle, Meeker and Vernal to Salt Lake City. By adopting it a lot of sandy desert would be avoided. Rio Blanco people should favor the White River-Duchesne route.

n Lige Joslin was elected president of the Meeker Lions Club for the coming year. Joslin will succeed Bud Conrado. Other officers include first vice president Roger Purdy, second vice president Frank Cooley, secretary W.T. Hollenbaugh, treasurer Marshall Steen, lion tamer Gus Halandras and tail twister Thurston Dull.
n Gary Coulter, manager of the Meeker Airport, has added spraying equipment to the airport’s services.
n “A conservative is usually someone who thinks nothing should be done for the first time.”
n Miss Gail Reagle became the bride of Ronald R. Miller April 29 at the Meeker Bible Church. Rev. Max Weir performed the ceremony.

n County commissioners answered “no” to the question, “are you going to close the hospital?” at a special meeting at the Fairfield Center.
n Even the oldtimers are having a little trouble remembering a better spring than we’ve all enjoyed this year. All this beauty is probably lost on county commissioners Kenneth Kenney and Allan Jones, however, who are the subject of a recall effort.
n Justin Seely’s school-record shattering shot put at the state meet in Grand Junction last weekend will remain a personal highlight for this sports reporter.
n Kellie Borchard is one of about 181 top high school junior students throughout Colorado selected to receive Book Awards from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
n It was a big day for MHS basketball players Leif Joy and Kirk Henderson as they signed scholarships to attended the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to play basketball this coming year.
n Trudy and Craig Nielsen are the parents of a new baby daughter, Nicole Renae, born May 14 at 2:10 p.m. in Pioneers Hospital.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago
n Between 50-100 people will be in Rangely some time next spring to help with the proposed nuclear experiment in the Manco formation of the Douglas Creek gas area about 17 miles south of Rangely.
n The Rangely District Hospital, soon to celebrate its sixth birthday, has arranged a display in the lobby as part of the National Hospital Week theme.
n Rangely’s Panthers came in second Saturday in the annual Northwest League conference track meet held here.

n On Monday Mike Miller, president of the Rangely Lions Club, announced that the Lions of Colorado will hold their mortgage burning ceremony of the Woodland Park Center May 15.
n Grand opening services will be held at the new Rangely Seventh-Day Adventist Church at 230 East Rio Blanco Ave. May 14.
n Scott Reed and Down Conrad were the Rangely Middle School students of the month.
n Now showing at the Campus Theatre: “King Kong,” “Carrie,” and “The Pink Panther Strike Again.”

n Roy Romer, Governor of the State of Colorado, will be the keynote speaker at a luncheon to be held at CNCC May 29 in conjunction with an economic development seminar.
n State ‘A’ track meet qualifiers: Scott Moore, Shawnee Tomlinson, Chuck Allred, Daveena Fogg, Scott Linday, Jenni Hames, Steve Geyler, Brenda Brenton, Andy Harward, Leona Hazlewood, Kim Hamilton, Jim Schuckers and Russ McDaniel.
n The kindergarten children enjoyed a ride of the Amtrak train. April 17 and May 1. Patricia Williams, with several parents helping her supervise the youngsters in her class
