Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago
• Another Rio Blanco County scholar has made good and has come to the front in fine shape. His name is Frank P. Goeder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Goeder, who have resided near Rangely for nearly two decades.
• We have just received, at Rifle, a new well drilling machine and are moving it into the Piceance Creek country, where we have a number of contracts for deep wells, and, as soon as we are through down there, we will pull into the White River country. Mr. C.R. Dowler, who is a man of many years’ experience drilling deep wells, will be in charge to operate the drill. We will be pleased to have anyone wanting a well, call and see us.
• The first “batch” of butter turned out by Baer’s White River Creamery showed numerous black specks. Investigation showed that the water was the cause of this. The defect was immediately remedied by thoroughly filtering the water. It was not intended to place any of this butter on the market but the delivery man got hold of some of it by mistake. It was called back as soon as the error was discovered.
• Some men carry $500 around and pay no attention to it. But if some other guys get hold of a $5 bill they have to get drunk.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• Mrs. Calvin Fritzlan has purchased the lease and equipment in the White River Restaurant from Mrs. McKee and took over the management of this cafe and lounge this week.
• A business deal was completed this week whereby Howard Joy has purchased the Valley Supply and Parts business that has been owned by Mr. Walter Ceasar of Craig and operated in Meeker by Val Himes. The business has been in the front end of the Legion building and was established about two years ago as a branch of the Craig parts store.
• The Meeker High School band appeared in the annual Strawberry Days parade in Glenwood Springs last Saturday and won second place in competition with the other bands marching.
• Mr. and Mrs. Dudley E. Farthing of La Junta, Colo., announce the engagement of their daughter, Judith Kay to Richard Ellsworth Aldrich, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Aldrich of Freemont, Calif.
• Three Missouri men were found guilty in Glenwood Springs recently after they pleaded guilty to charges of illegal possession of big game via the U.S. Mail. Justice of the Peace Robert Young fined each of the three $150 plus $5 costs.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
• Mike Anderson, son of Gus and Teresa Anderson of Meeker, recently attended the Co-op Youth Leadership Conference at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. He was one of 600 outstanding young people from the Midwest attending one of the three week-long sessions during June and was sponsored by White River Electric Association.
• Greg and Brenda Papez would like to announce the arrival of their son, Kyle Benjamin Papez, last Thursday, June 16, at Pioneers Hospital in Meeker.
• In her freshman year at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Lynn Sprod, a 1987 graduate from Meeker High School, was listed on the 1988 spring semester academic freshman honor roll.
• Regas Halandras, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Halandras of Meeker, received his bachelor’s degree in social science during this spring’s University of Denver commencement exercises on May 31.
• Steven C. Franklin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd G. Franklin of Cortez and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Franklin of Meeker, has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force upon graduation from Office Training School at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• James K. “Butch” Young, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Young of Rangely, has been discharged from the U.S. Navy and has excepted a position with the Lockeed Plant in San Jose, Calif. Butch graduated from Rangely High School in 1959 and joined the Navy.
• Roy Harper was elected president of the Rio Blanco County Pioneers Association at the annual meeting June 1, succeeding Mrs. Josephine Holland. Other officers elected were Martha Ridings, vice-president; Alice Cunningham, secretary; Dorothy Kehrberger, treasurer; and Mrs. Arther Amick, historian.
• A Jaycee-sponsored meeting was held on Thursday evening June 13 at the Snak Bar in order to discuss plans and assignments for Operation Clean-up for the Town of Rangely.
• The Uintah School District has pledged 50 percent of the original installation cost and up to $175 per month maintenance for the first year. Additional installations will be needed at Tabby Mountain and Lapoint Ridge.
• Volunteers for the Tri-County Health Review have been attending workshops in Oak Creek, Steamboat Springs, Craig, Meeker and Rangely. The purpose of the workshops is to orient the volunteers with the questionnaire being used in the Health Review.

Rangely Times — 40 years ago
• A Fourth of July celebration, featuring square dancing and fireworks will be held the evening of July 4 at the Trading Post, four miles west of Rangely, according to Mr. and Mrs. John Toles, the owners.
• Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Cobos of Longmont announce the birth of a daughter, Jill Christina, born June 7 in Longmont United Hospital. Mrs. Cobos is the former Beverly McCormick.
• Miss Ann Stewart is the new physical education instructor at the Rangely Middle School and High School, replacing Mrs. Dollie Hahn, who retired this year. Miss Stewart attended Basalt schools from kindergarten through 12, then received her degree from the University of Northern Colorado.
• The Project Rio Blanco claims and public information office in Meeker will close June 29, project officials announced today.
• Don Strain wishes to announce the engagement of his daughter, Denise Jean, to Robert E. Staley Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Staley, all of Rangely. Both young people are graduates of Rangely High School. Their future plans include a move to Glendale, Ariz., where Staley is enrolled in the Arizona Automotive Institute. The couple is planning an August wedding.

Rangely Times — 30 years ago
• On June 5, the White River Bowmen had their inaugural annual archery tournament. Around 30 shooters, good weather and good competition with shooters coming from Craig, Meeker and Vernal, Utah. Also included was a Novelty Card Shoot and raffle.
• Five bicyclists participated in the 1983 Bike-A-Thon that was held May 14. They rode for children at St. Jude’s Hospital. Most of those five riders rode 10 miles or more in order to qualify for prizes. The Recreation and Parks District would like to thank all the participants for their needed help.
• In 1981, President Reagan proclaimed the period between Flag Day, June 14, and Independence Day, July 4, to be “Honor America Days.” Thus, it is appropriate for us to pause for a moment to reflect on our flag and the nation we will be honoring in the next few weeks.
• Rio Blanco RE-4 School Board handled a large number of items on their regular June 14 agenda. By a unanimous vote, the board approved a contract with Phipps Construction of Grand Junction for pre-construction services on the middle school. Construction work on the school should start about July 15. the school is scheduled to be completed by August 1984.

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line.  The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.  See last week’s paper for a list of ways to help or contact the County Weed & Pest District at 970-878-9670 or the Conservation District office at 970-878-9838 with any questions. Second place team was Drake Consulting: Travis Kaiser, John Douglas, Tony Bartolomucci and Bob Brandeberry. Third place team Mr. Rogers and the Hood (accepted by Doug Rogers) Gary Rogers, Mark Beauchamp, Kyle Schutte and Rick Gunter. The white fish have been frozen and will be served at the annual White River Community Association fish fry fundraiser in June.
