Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago

Mr. A. J. Broomfield and Miss Lena Kracht were united in marriage by Rev Geo. E. Berger at Glenwood Springs on June 19, 1913. They returned a few days ago and are making their home in Oakridge Park.

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vance Stephenson died at the home of the parents near Meeker, June 21, 1913, of pneumonia after an illness of several weeks.

Harry Durham rode the Masonic goat through the third heat last Monday night. He was shaken loose but quit his goatship with both hands full of wool. Out of town Masons coming in to witness the performance were William Taylor, Teddy Moran, Riley Hamilton, Al Durham and Raymond Durham-Craig Courier.

Mrs. Vonita Buckles received word last week that she had been appointed as Grand Ruth of the Grand Chapter of Eastern Star of Colorado and will serve in that station at the Grand Lodge sessions, which will be held in September in Denver.

Mrs. Ethel Starbuck returned home last week after a trip to Tulsa, Okla., where she was the Colorado delegate to the Mountain and Plains Business Educational Association convention.

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Jones of Meeker have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Judith Ann, to Curtis W. Wells, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alden C. Wells of Shawnee Mission, Kan.

Bob and Barbara Crawford celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 25 in Spokane, Wash. Their daughter, Patsy Swartz of Seattle, Wash., and son, Jim Crawford of Albuquerque, N.M., hosted a lovely reception and dance for their parents.

Rowdy Atwood and Travis Anderson did an excellent job of team roping at the Colorado State High School Rodeo finals held in Colorado Springs two weeks ago, and as such will be competing at the National Finals in Pueblo the last week in July.

14 Baptist young people from Colorado will have the opportunity of a lifetime next month when they attend the Sixth Baptist Youth World Conference in Beirut, Lebanon. The Colorado students also will spend another six days in Jordan and Israel, visiting Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Bethany, Nazareth, Tiberias, Cana of Galilee and other famous Biblical landmarks.

Janice A. Atkinson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Darrel T. Muller, received her associate in applied science degree in data processing from Mesa College on June 7. She was cited for academic excellence, having achieved a grade point average of 3.88 at Mesa College and was recognized as a member of Phi Theta Kappa honorary fraternity.

Bruce James, a 6-foot-6 senior basketball player from Del Norte, has signed a letter of intent to attend Rangely College this fall. James made the second-team Denver Post All-State Basketball Team.

Archaeological find excavated: Gardner turned in a site form to the State Historical Preservation Society. Because the site is in the area of an active oil and gas exploration, the BLM decided to excavate it for its own protection. It is assumed that the inhabitants of this dwelling were from the Fremont culture, so called from the location in Utah where their evidence was first found.
