Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago
• A new schedule went into effect yesterday on the Rifle-Meeker mail route that affects incoming and outgoing stages. Instead of leaving Rifle at 7 in the morning, they now leave after the arrival of the Denver mail train, all the way from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
• On Thursday of last week a Denver & Rio Grande locomotive fireman discovered a dead body in the Eagle River, about Minturn, which later proved to be that of Edward O. Lunney, a son of P.H. Lunney, who has interests on Coal Creek Mesa in this county.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• Meeker’s hard working swim team captured a fifth-place team score at the annual Exchange Club swim meet held at Lincoln Park Pool in Grand Junction.
• The Meeker fire department has been really a busy institution this week with nearly as many alarms as a city department and every time there were a goodly number of department men on hand for each alarm.
• Chandler & Simpson drilling company is putting down a deep test well in the western part of RIo Blanco County. The well location is in SWNE 30, 1 south and range 101 west, in what is known as the Dragon Trail area.
• Meeker was host Monday July 29 to the Northwest Colorado District 4-H Demonstration Contest.
• The Meeker OTA baseball teams have completed another season of regular play and are now ready to enter the district tournament, which will be held in Meeker this weekend.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
• The Meeker Town Council agreed Tuesday night to meet as soon as possible with representatives of Craig, Moffat and Rio Blanco counties about a prepayment of severance tax request to assist Pioneers Hospital.
• Joe Collins and Wiley Berthelson are both candidates for county commissioner.
• The Meeker Chamber of Commerce recently hired a new assistant, Darlene Ouellette, who will be assisting the executive director, Linda Steele, in the day-to-day operations of the chamber as well as working with the major events held annually in Meeker.
• When he was just a teenage, Monte Montgomery was one of the rising golf stars on the Western Slope. Things haven’t slowed down much for the 18-year-old Grand Junction golfer as he walked away with his second lopsided win in as many weeks last Sunday by capturing top honors at the Lischke Memorial Tournament.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• Mrs. James Sinclair has won the Yard-of-the-Week plaque awarded by the Rangely Garden Club.
• Mr. and Mrs. Ray C. Carnes are announcing the approaching marriage of their daughter, Jo Etta, to H. Lane Daggett. An Aug. 16 wedding is planned in the Christian Church here.
• Colorado oil production during the first six months of 1963 dropped 8.5 percent below the same period in 1962 — a decline due primarily to a drop in production at the Adena field in Morgan County and the Plum Bush Creek field in Washington County.
• Jame E. Jones was recently appointed chief park ranger at Dinosaur National Park.

Rangely Times — 40 years ago
• Rangely Standard Service reported a burglary occurring sometime Saturday night, when a thief entered the station through a west window and stole approximately $180 in cash. The burglary was reported Sunday.
• Jay Leinweber gave his daughter, Cheryl Eileen Leinweber, in marriage to Richard Laurence Mann at 2 p.m. on July 4 in the Rangely Christian Church.
• Mrs. Barney Oldham of Maybell wished to announce the engagement and coming marriage of her daughter, LaVern N. Shelton, to David E. Johnson.
• Fourty-seven Boy Scouts and their leader from the Western Colorado Council Boy Scouts of America will arrive at Farragut State Park on beautiful Lake Pen Orielle in norther Idaho on July 31.

Rangely Times — 30 years ago
• Rodney and Tammy Cook announce the birth of their daughter Angelina born July 15, 1983. She weighed 7 pounds 9 1/2 ounces and was 20 inches long.
• Plans for an exciting year at Rio Blanco School District RE-4 are now being finalized and school will start for all students on Aug. 23. New classes, a new principal, improved scheduling, a remodeled high school and prospects for an outstanding athletic season await students at the high school.
• After much controversy and delay it appears that a settlement has basically been reached between the Town of Rangely and West Rangely Water Users Association as regards bills and penalties that have accumulated that past two and one half years.
• Laura Lea Wright and Craig Alan Wright were married June 10, 1983, at the Christian Church in Rangely.
