The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
– Simp Harp, the genial manager of the Meeker Hotel, was the busiest man in town last week. The French glass recently arrived from Denver has been placed behind the bar and adds greatly to the appearance of the saloon.
– The Chinaman force in the kitchen will be there “all-a-same-white-man.”

n Among the young men and women of this community who completed their college education this year was Ben Franklin, son of Mr. P.B. Franklin of Meeker. Ben received his B.S. degree from Oklahoma State University.
n Hal Thornburg, son of Mrs. Evaline Thornburg and Vance Thornburg recently graduated from Culver Military Academy. Hal spent several summers on the upper White River when the family had their summer home above Buford.
n Assigning telephone numbers in Japan is complicated because certain numbers have been good luck, wealth, bankruptcy and death. Auspicious numbers bring a high price. Unlucky ones are fobbed off on less discriminating foreigners.

n The Younger Brothers will play for the barn dance this weekend. Saturday’s Range Call concert will feature Charly McClain.
n The 1986 Range Call parade marshals are Dallas and Anna Collins. Range Call royalty are queen Becca Mobley and attendants Haley McKay and Ann Marie Nielsen.
n Betty Lou Koester and Gary Moyer announced their engagement.
n Meeker’s 12-year-old swimming star, Karrin Borchard, continued to rewrite the record book as she erased the 11-year-old 100 free mark set by Grand Junction’s Shauna Gilmore.

n Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Norman are the recipients of the “Yard of the Week” award.
n The bag limit for mountain lions was upped from one to three by the Game, Fish and Parks Commission.

n The Centennial-Bicentennial committee has disclosed the schedule of events for the July 5 celebration. At 10 a.m. the “Spirit of ‘76” parade will kick off the day’s festivities.
n Judy Powell won reserve high point youth at the Norwood appaloosa show. Powell and Beth Hayes, accompanied by their mothers and Judy’s grandparents, traveled to Norwood to participate in the San Miguel Basin Appaloosa Horse Show.

n June Dotson, Lucy Cook, Lavella Justus, Naomi Hoops, Vicki McPhail and Peggy Rector participated in the golf tournament June 27-29 at the Rifle Creek Golf Course.
n Marine Lance Cpl. Christopher P. Chessani, son of Cynthia E. Huber of Rangely, is currently deployed to the Western Pacific.
n St. Ignatius Catholic Church has a new pastor, Father Lawrence “Larry” T. Solan.
n Claude Rose, a 1986 graduate of Rangely High School, has been added to the All-American wrestling recruiting list.
