RANGELY I Rangely Middle School hosted the annual league tournament last weekend. The tournament brought Meeker, Craig and Steamboat Springs to town. Both the seventh-grade and eighth-grade Rangely teams finished fourth.
Rangely’s seventh-grade team started off the tournament with a game against cross county rival Meeker. Rangely was unable to get anything going and lost 7-57. Rangely was at a disadvantage as only six players suited up for the Panthers. Despite the disadvantage Rangely played hard throughout the game. Top scorers for the Panthers were Cristopher Hogan, Troy Allred and Caleb Lee.
The seventh-grade consolation game pitted Rangely versus Steamboat. Rangely was unable to score early and came up on the losing end 10-19. The top scorers again were Hogan, Allred and Lee.
Rangely’s eighth-grade team opened with the Craig Bulldogs. The Panthers turned in their best half of the year and had the upset in mind with a 14-13 halftime lead. In the second half the Bulldogs outscored the Panthers 12-24. Rangely lost the game with a final score of 26-37. Kelton Elam led scorers with 13 points. Also adding points were Allred, Kadin Denison and Marshall Way.
Rangely played Meeker in the consolation finals. Rangely got off to a great start and led the Cowboys 9-5 after the first quarter. Meeker rallied back to tie the game 15-15 at halftime. The Panthers regained the lead in the third quarter with hot shooting by Elam and Dension. The Panthers slowed down and were only able to score four points in the final quarter. Final Score: Rangely 33 Meeker 35. Top scorers for the Panthers were Elam with 11, Denison and Way with six each, Allred and Allred with four and Mitchell Webber adding two.
Rangely did a great job hosting the league tournament. Congratulations to all participants.
