Rhiwan Williams and Drew Drake from Kirstie Strate’s fifth-grade class demonstrated their robotic project Friday at Meeker Elementary School. Fellow team member Haley Rippy, from Keri Grieser’s class, is not pictured. The robotics project, taught by Ann Bailey, takes 45 minutes a week for eight weeks to teach coding to the students. The robotic kits are made by Lego, and funding to pay for 10 of the kits came from a Meeker Education Foundation grant. The Eastern Rio Blanco Metropolitan Recreation and Park District, high school student Brandan Lozano and Dr. Bob Dorsett volunteered time to help the students. The robot created by the Williams, Drake and Rippy team had a color sensor that controlled the robot’s speed. If the sensor “saw” yellow, it slowed the robot’s forward motion, and if it saw “red,” it stopped.
