MEEKER I “This event will continue to grow in popularity,” local golf pro Jim Cook said of the Xcel Energy Luau, played last Saturday at Meeker Golf Course. “It’s a really fun event.”
Although there was an outright winner, the scramble format of the luau made the contest close, with only two strokes separating the top six of the 11 teams entered.
Dennis Rohn, Bill de Vergie, along with Tim and Cindy Nelson won the luau. Rohn’s team shot a 62.
Three teams tied for second with a score of 63 and it was Matt Fellow’s team, which consisted of teammates Randy Hall, Ron Kelly Crawford and Greg Ackerman, that won the putt-off. Dave Brown, Clint Chappell, Joe Bird and Billy Stewart finished third overall and luau organizer Todd Morris’ team finished fourth.
“It’s tons of fun,” Morris, who teamed up with Mindy Burke, Norbert Boes and Bobbie Evenson, said. “The tournament wouldn’t have turned out as well as it did without the help of Tim Nelson and Brenda Boes.”
Jason, Roston and Cole Steiner, along with Kurt Kenney, tied with Chad Luce, Irv Griffin, Kurt Blunt and Todd Gerloff, with a score of 64.
Cook and his team of local golfers won the pro-am, played the day before the luau tourney.
In the pro-am, Cook, along with local golfers J.C. Watt, Pat Hughes and newcomer Jack “Cappuccino” Southerland won the tournament in a field of seven.
“It was on this hole,” Cook said from atop his greens mower, after cutting No. 9 green a couple days later. “We recorded five birdies on this hole.”
