MEEKER I Thanks to the generous support of two private landowners, the Colorado Division of Wildlife is offering hunters the opportunity to hunt deer and elk on private land near Meeker this fall. The Division of Wildlife Hunter Outreach Program has two separate hunting opportunities available for a total of six hunters.
The first hunt is a private land deer hunt for one lucky youth. Applicants for this hunt must be between the ages of 12 and 18. The hunt will take place during the fourth rifle season, which runs Nov. 17 through Nov. 21. Applicants must not already have a 2010 deer license.
The second opportunity is a private land late cow elk hunt. These hunts will take place in late November and December. The hunt is open to any hunters but preference will be given to youth and military veterans. This will be an unguided hunt on the 2,900-acre Berryman property. Hunters selected for this hunt must have a valid late-season private land cow elk license for unit 23 or an unfilled youth elk license from an earlier rifle season.
To apply for either hunt, note which hunt you are applying for and submit name, date of birth, contact information and CID number. Applicants must also write a short note about why they should be selected for one of these very limited and special private land hunting opportunities. If a youth, the letter also needs to include the name and contact information for a parent or guardian who will attend the hunt with the youth.
Applications must be received at the Meeker DOW office by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10. Applications should be mailed to Bailey Franklin, PO Box 1181, Meeker, CO 81641.
Selected hunters will be notified after the selection process is completed. Questions about the hunt or application process should be directed to the Meeker DOW office at 878-6090.
