Rangely Middle School seventh grade science students held a competition where they designed and built solar cars. Each group was given the same materials: a photovoltaic solar panel, balsa wood, motor, gears, wheels, tires and axles. Students then designed and constructed their cars, using concepts about friction, aerodynamics, gear ratios. Races were held to determine the winners using stop watches and distance. Students collaborated as teams to use critical thinking skills and integrate math concepts, as well as learning about the global implications of solar energy.
