Meeker’s Ethel Starbuck gave the keynote remarks at the Oct. 10 celebration of Meeker High School’s 60th anniversary in the high school gymnasium. Starbuck was a 38-year-old business/commercial studies teacher at the time the school opened in 1955. Starbuck is flanked on the far left by her son, Dr. Gene Starbuck, a Meeker graduate and retired social studies professor from Colorado Mesa University, and Meeker School District Superintendent Chris Selle. Starbuck, now 98 years old, told several amusing stories about the early days of the new Rio Blanco County High School in Meeker. Starbuck’s late husband, Paul, for whom Starbuck Football Stadium is named, was the vocational-agriculture teacher and a longtime coach at the school.
