MEEKER I A three-month investigation led to the arrest of Randall Devaney, 52, who cashed a check from the Meeker Cemetery District for more than $25,000 — partial payment on a metal building — but the materials never arrived.
Devaney, owner of Sterling Steel Inc., Larkspur, Colo., is scheduled to appear Friday in court in Rio Blanco County on a felony theft charge. He was arrested Sept. 29 on an outstanding theft warrant in Douglas County. Devaney has a criminal history in four different states dating back to 1979.
The theft case involves Devaney taking a check for $25,697.20 on Nov. 10, 2009, from the Meeker Cemetery District for a down payment on a metal building. The building materials were scheduled to be delivered March 15, but never arrived. Cemetery district personnel contacted Devaney by telephone and in person between March 15 and May 25, “during which time Devaney made excuse after excuse as to why the materials had not arrived,” according to the arrest warrant.
Meeker Cemetery District filed a theft report against Devaney on July 14. Lt. Phil Stubblefield of the Meeker Police Department investigated the case.
