Striegel nominated for philanthropy award

Larry “Bud” Striegel has been nominated by Colorado Northwestern Community College for the 2011 Council for Resource Development (CRD) Benefactor Award, announced Russell George, CNCC president.

Each year, CRD recognizes the outstanding contributions of ten donors across the country who have made a difference to their community colleges. These donors are chosen for their dedication, commitment and pride in their community colleges. The CRD Benefactor Award is the only national showcase to recognize donors to the nation’s community colleges.

Striegel’s most recent and significant contribution of $1 million toward the renovation of the W.C. Striegel Engineering Center is the most significant contribution to CNCC by a private donor.

He also established the W.C. Striegel Scholarship Fund in 2002, as well as the Striegel Book Scholarship Fund. He also contributes scholarships to local high school students who plan to attend CNCC after graduation. Another significant contribution Striegel has made to CNCC was the development of CNCC’s softball diamond, donating time, labor and his heavy equipment for the project. Recently, he donated his time and equipment to clearing another rocky and very hilly area on campus that will be utilized for a future soccer field. A significant contribution to CNCC’s Aviation Maintenance department includes the use of Striegel’s large crane and operator to unload a donated Lear jet and is one of the many projects he has donated his time and equipment for at CNCC.

Colorado Northwestern Community College President Russell George commented that “Bud is one of those quiet community members whose generosity and kindness have served the Rangely area and CNCC over the years.” George added, “Bud’s commitment to fundraising and enhancement of program goals is his vision for educational opportunities for all students. Their future is what drives Bud’s dedication to CNCC and education.”

The award recognizes individuals, foundations or businesses/corporations for outstanding contributions to community colleges and embodies the ideals of philanthropy, leadership and volunteerism in the service of community, technical and junior colleges. One recipient from all the nominees to each of CRD’s 10 regions will receive the award on behalf of that region at the gala CRD Benefactor Awards Banquet on Friday, Nov. 11, which takes place in conjunction with the CRD Annual Conference, Nov. 7-12 in Washington, D.C.
