MEEKER I In December, all of the fifth-graders at Meeker Elementary School had the opportunity to write an essay on the topic of “Why I am proud to be an American.”
These essays were handwritten, then typed by the students, and mailed to the Rifle Elks Lodge #21 for judging. Lodge chairperson Tom Fisher came to Meeker Elementary School in February to award each of our fifth-graders with a certificate of participation. He was accompanied by Alan Rasic, also a member of the Lodge and a Navy veteran.
They generously gave each of the Meeker Elementary School fifth-graders a flag desk set that could be assembled. Fisher announced to the fifth-graders that three of their essays would go on to compete at the district level.
The three essays were written by Maleena Denny, Eli Newman and Elissa Quinteros. These three students’ essays placed second, first and third, respectively, in the mountain district.
Each of these students received a U.S. savings bond for their essays. Meeker Elementary School is proud of all the fifth-graders who took part in this essay writing contest.
Meeker Elementary School had the most entries for the “Why I am proud to be an American” essay contest this year and is extremely proud of Maleena, Eli and Elissa for representing Meeker Elementary School in the mountain district level of competition.
