MEEKER I Following fantastic performances at the Southwest Conference Championship Meet last Friday and Saturday for the Moffat County swim team, five girls are headed to state.
During a meet at Gunnison the 200-yard freestyle relay team made up of Ellina Jones, Jeni Kincher, Alexa Neton and Kelsey McDiffett, qualified for state with a time of 1 minute 54.33 seconds. Now two more relay teams are making the trip.
The 200-yard medley relay qualified last Friday with a time of 2:8.87. The medley consists of one girl swimming each of the four strokes, Jones swims the backstroke, McDiffett is the second leg swimming the breaststroke, Ann Cooper swims the butterfly, and Neton is the final leg swimming the freestyle.
Saturday, in the last event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay swam a qualifying time and are also headed to state. Teammates Jones, Kincher, Neton and McDiffett swam a combined time of 4:12.42 to qualify.
Individually McDiffett qualified for the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley and Neton cut 23.9 seconds off of her 500 yard freestyle to qualify.
The Colorado State Championship swim meet is next weekend at the Veteran’s Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton, Colorado. Both the swimming prelims and finals will be on Saturday, Feb. 15 for class 3A.
