Declining deer herd to be discussed

MEEKER | The Colorado Division of Wildlife is inviting the public to a meeting in Meeker on Monday, June 20, to discuss their concerns about a decrease in the White River deer herd with Division wildlife managers and biologists. The meeting is scheduled from 6-8 p.m., at the Rio Blanco County Fairgrounds.

Man sentenced in moose case

A hunter from Highlands Ranch, Colo., pleaded guilty April 1 to a felony and several misdemeanors in a case that highlights a growing concern for Colorado wildlife managers — hunters who fail to correctly identify big game animals.

Mountain lion captured near fairgrounds

A jab stick was used to sedate the young mountain lion. Once it was captured it was put into a crate for transporting it to a shelter.

MEEKER I After eluding its captors for a couple of hours, a young mountain lion was corralled last week at the Rio Blanco County Fairgrounds. “I think that one was harder than usual,” Jon Wangnild of the Colorado Division of Wildlife said of the capture of the mountain lion Oct. 20.

Colin Keeler of Meeker was the winner of an essay contest sponsored by the Colorado Division of Wildlife, in partnership with Silver Spur Ranch and Spur Outfitters. His essay on the topic, “How is hunting an important wildlife management tool?”, allowed Colin to participate in a cow moose hunt. He is pictured with his moose.

Meeker man charged with illegal hunting

RBC I A Meeker man could face more than $12,000 in fines because of alleged hunting violations. The Colorado Division of Wildlife is continuing its investigation of Kenneth Coughlin, 53, who was issued a summons for illegal possession, hunting in a closed area and a “Samson” surcharge.
