BLM hosts open house

MEEKER — Although commercial oil shale development on federal lands is many years away, the Bureau of Land Management held an open house last Thursday to inform the public about the draft resource management plan amendments and Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) for oil shale and tar sands in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.

On July 12, Rhett Long of Vernal, Utah, visited the Rangely 4-H Community Pens to teach the 4-H members how to shave a pig, what to expect in showmanship at the Rio Blanco County Fair and offer advice for feeding 4-H swine. There were more than 30 4-H members and parents, some from as far as Grand Junction, present to listen to Long. Bonnie Long, who organized the event, said, “Rhett did a great job and we had a great turnout from Rangely and Grand Junction 4-H members and parents. Thank you to Encana for adding monetary support for activities such as this.” In 2015, a new 4-H club called Elite 8 will be exploring livestock, leadership and will be putting together another clinic to inform 4-H members, she said. Every 4-H member at the event received a prize. The Rio Blanco County Fair officially begins Friday and runs through Aug. 2.

RBC I All the fun and work involved in the annual Rio Blanco County Fair officially begins Friday with the equestrian events and runs through Aug. 2 at the Rio Blanco County Fairgrounds in Meeker.

Leota Cook, at 90 years of life, was the oldest supporter on the track for the Save Our Track Walk-a-thon on July 5. She was sponsored by all 11 of her great-grandkids, including McKelivie Cook Lay, the youngest walker at just 1 year old.

Walkathon raises $25,000 for new MHS track

MEEKER I The “Save Our Track Walk-A-Thon, held July 5 in Meeker in an effort to raise funds to repair the running track at Meeker High School “Was very successful,” according to Meeker organizer Debbie Cook.

The Rangely Community Gardens’ newest component is its children’s garden, including a sunflower circle, bean fort and more. Above, Grace Noyes and Caleb Wiley give a watermelon plant a new home. Full-size and kid’s plots are still available, along with volunteer opportunities in the community, botanical and children’s gardens.

Plenty of growing season ahead at Rangely Community Gardens

RBC I Sure, it’s July, which to some feels like summer is half over. Strictly speaking, however, the gardening season is still young, which leaves plenty of time to join Rangely Community Gardens many activities.

These branches were piled in the street in a Meeker neighborhood on Friday. This is the type of trash and debris, including unmowed and untrimmed lawns, that the Town of Meeker will be cracking down on in the next few months, in the hope that residents will respond and clean up their residences. The city is serious about the problem, according to Meeker Town Manager Scott Meszaros, who said the town will be enforcing clean-up rules on residents who refuse.
