Several people drop in as VFW and Ladies’ Auxiliary, Lions and Legion host open house

MEEKER I The new home of Meeker Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5843, VFW Ladies Auxiliary No. 5843 and American Legion Post No. 74 had several visitors Tuesday as the groups held a combined open house for folks interested in seeing the facility or interested in joining one of the groups.

MEEKER I On Tuesday, there will be an open house in Meeker to show off the new home of the Meeker Lions Club, Meeker VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 5843 and American Legion Post No. 74.

Meeker VFW, Lions Club to share new home

MEEKER I Meeker VFW Post No. 5843, enabled through several generous donations, has purchased the former First Federal Savings and Loan bank building at 290 Fourth St. in Meeker. The building will be the new home of the VFW post and the Meeker Lions Club.

Ken Coffin named 2014 ‘Lion of the Year’

MEEKER I The Meeker Lions Club presented awards at its annual Christmas party in early December. Mark Rogers and Bill Jordan received awards for their outstanding service to the club and Ken Coffin was recognized as “Lion of the Year” for 2014.

Colorado Grand rolls through Meeker, donates to cause

Eddie O'Brien, the community liaison for The Colorado Grand, presented a couple of checks Sept. 11 as the charitable organization's vintage sports cars rolled through town, with a stop at City Park, which included lunch served by the Meeker Lions Club. "We've been coming to Meeker for at least a half dozen times. We put on this event once a year. It's a four-day event that runs through the state of Colorado," O'Brien said. "We raise a lot of money. We'll give away between $300,000 and $400,000 per year to all of the communities we go through." O'Brien presented checks for $7,500 to the Meeker Lions Club and a $7,500 check for a local student going to a college or university in Colorado. Paul Jordan and Julie Pearce accepted on behalf of the Meeker Lions Club.

Meeker Night Out…

The Meeker Police Department drew roughly 150 people to Paintbrush Park on Aug. 5 for Meeker Night Out, which included a barbecue and a movie in honor of National Night Out, designed to bring families together for an evening and to cut down on crime activities for the night.

Youth mental health classes set in Meeker

MEEKER I The youth version of the Mental Health First Aid class will be taught to parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, neighbors, health and human service workers and other caring citizens on how to help an adolescent (ages 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or who is in crisis.

Kids’ Fishing Day in Meeker

Plenty of kids and their parents took advantage of Meeker Kids’ Fishing Day activities at Circle Park in Meeker on Saturday. Lots of kids were introduced to fishing at the event, which included instruction by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and lunch served by the Meeker Lions Club.

MEEKER I If you look around at almost any social event during the year in Meeker, chances are good the Meeker Lions Club is there, helping out, bartending at this weekend’s After Birth Ball or sponsoring last weekend’s annual Easter egg hunt or putting on a barbecue at the Rio Blanco County Fair.

Meeker Lions Club President Tom Allen presented the special award to Mark Rogers of Meeker at the Dec. 10 club meeting/Christmas party. We regret the error.
