Season ends for Meeker, excited about the future

The Meeker High School baseball team (above) lost 3-2 to the Dolores Bears in the first round of the 2A state playoffs in Cortez, but everyone is excited about the future of Cowboy baseball. Playing for the Cowboys in the front row are Matt Devore, Cody Stickler, Kenny Kohls, Chevy Mohr, Dillan Frantz and Hunter Garcia. MEEKER I For the first time in several years, the Meeker Cowboy baseball team advanced to post-season play. And although the Dolores Bears ended the Cowboys’ season with a 3-2 win in Cortez in the first round of the 2A state playoffs, Meeker coaches are excited about the future.

Meeker Cowboys come out on top of RBC rivalry

Meeker’s Bruno Juarez jumps on junior Matt Frantz, who was the starting and winning pitcher for the Cowboys, with nine strikeouts against the Rangely Panthers. It was the Cowboys’ first and only league win this season, a pigtail game that will advance them to the district tournament to play Dolores on Friday in Cortez.

RBC I The Meeker High School baseball team finished the regular season with a 0-12 league record, and the Rangely High School team finished with a 4-8 league record, its four wins coming from beating its Rio Blanco County rival in two doubleheaders.

Meeker High School students Devon Pontine, Robby Jensen, Brady Bland and John Mac Sheridan watched the game from the comfort of a recliner and a couch in the back of a truck and may watch again tonight as the Cowboys host Grand Valley.

Because of windy weather, Meeker senior Dylan Mobley and his teammates practiced inside Monday in preparation for Saturday’s doubleheader in Paonia against the Eagles. Meeker lost a pair of games to the Bulldogs in Hotchkiss on Saturday.

RHS Panthers beat MHS Cowboys in doubleheader

Leading the Panthers this season are seniors Enterline, Ryan Wilczek and Lucas Heinle.

RBC I “The games against Meeker were as I expected; they were both a battle,” Rangely head baseball coach Paul Fortunato said about the doubleheader Saturday at home against the Cowboys. “Both team played extremely hard and let it out on the field.”

MEEKER I The planned home baseball game in Meeker was moved to the middle ground between Meeker and Hotchkiss and played in Grand Junction on April 20.

Panthers take out Cowboys, twice

The second doubleheader between Rio Blanco County’s two high school baseball teams was supposed to be played in Meeker, but, because of a wet field, the games were played in Rangely on Saturday, when the Panthers won both as they did in the first doubleheader. Playing for the Panthers this year are, in back, coach Gary Denny, coach West Torsell, Chad Bolding, Gabe Garcia, Cameron Enterline, Bryson Palacios, Layne Mecham, Jimmie Sherman, Tobie Gasper, Josh Bolding, coach Jeremy Lohry and coach Paul Fortunato. In front, Fredy Ruiz, Manny Madrid, Kelton Elam, Kiki Ruiz, Jessy Powell and Kaulan Brady.

RBC I On Saturday, the Meeker baseball team played what was supposed to be the first home games of the season against the Rangley Panthers, but the games were moved to Rangley after the Meeker fields were subject to rain and snow.

MEEKER I This past weekend the Meeker Cowboys’ baseball team took to the road for the last away games of the regular season – taking on the Paonia Eagles in a doubleheader.
