Meeker High School seniors playing on the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams ended the regular season with wins against Rio Blanco County rival Rangely last Friday and both teams won pigtail games Tuesday to advance to the district tournament starting this Friday in Paonia.

The Meeker High School band played during the home game last Friday, adding to Meeker’s home court advantage. The varsity basketball teams will play at home again this Saturday starting at 2:30.

MHS Cowboys earn 2nd place at WREA Shootout

Kane Hamilton from Crested Butte, Tyler Davis of Moffat County, Connor Lee of Little Snake River, Meeker’s Raul Lopez and Scott Smith and Rangely Cameron Enterline were all named to the WREA Cowboy Shootout all-tournament team. Hamilton won the Slam Dunk contest and Lee was named the tournament’s MVP.

MEEKER I The Meeker Cowboys basketball team gained a berth in the championship game of the annual White River Electric “Cowboy Shootout” Saturday afternoon, but ended on the short side of the stick as they fell to Moffat County 50-46.

MEEKER I The lady Cowboys basketball team will open the 2012-2013 season on their own court against the Nucla Mustangs in the first round of the White River Electric Cowboy Shootout tonight.

Defending league champs

Meeker High School seniors Scott Smith, Tala Atoafa, Nate Walsh, Fernando Olivas, Alex Smith and Stefan Cochran, all with varsity experience, will lead the Cowboys boys’ basketball team this season as the defending league champions. Senior Wyatt Rowlett is not pictured.

MEEKER I Klark Kindler will start his 15th season as head coach of the Meeker High School boys’ basketball team, the longest head coaching tenure of the boys’ program according to local basketball aficionados. The Cowboys are the the defending league champions.

A win for the lady Cowboys vs. rival lady Panthers

MEEKER I The lady Cowboys faced off against the Rangely Panthers Saturday, Jan. 21 for an important victory against their county rivals which has kept them on the “teams to watch” list for Colorado Preps Network.

Cowboys pick up two wins, improve record to 10-1

Cowboy senior Cooper Smith broke away after a turnover against the Panthers last Saturday and slam dunked the ball. Smith led the Cowboys with 21 points in Rangely and scored 23 the night before in Meeker against Vail Mountain. The Cowboys will be on the road this weekend, playing in DeBeque Friday and North Park Saturday.

MEEKER I The Meeker Cowboys improved on their season record this past weekend with a pair of wins over the Vail Mountain Gore Rangers and cross county rivals the Rangely Panthers.

Lady Cowboys split the weekend on home court

The Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds and Lady Center Vikings traveled to Meeker last week from the San Luis Valley to play the lady Cowboys. Meeker lost to the Thunderbirds but beat the Vikings Saturday last. Assistant coach Mike Dinwiddie awaits the announcement of varsity players Sydney Hughes, Kaitlyn Dinwiddie, Deena Norell, Aly Ridings, Piper Haney, Kacey Collins, Taylor Neilson, Kathryn Doll, Kaysyn Chintala, Aubrey Walsh and head coach Greg Chintala.

MEEKER I The Sangre De Cristo Thunderbirds showed up in Meeker to play some defense and the lady Cowboys answered with their own defensive demonstration.

Cowboys start season in Aspen with two wins

MEEKER I The Meeker Cowboys mens’ basketball team started the 2011-12 campaign in grand fashion this past weekend, picking up two wins in the Aspen tournament.
