Lady Cowboys split games

MEEKER I The Lady Cowboys opened the 2011 part of the season with a new coach and two games on the road last weekend, losing the first in Hayden before winning in Vail. Meeker will play in Collbran Friday and host Paonia Saturday afternoon.

RBC high school sports get under way

RBC I The Meeker High School wrestling team will open the 2011 portion of the season tonight at home, with a dual against Coal Ridge, starting at 6 p.m., while the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will wait until Friday before taking the court.

Henderson named girls’ head coach

Deb Henderson was named the head coach for the Meeker girls' basketball team by the Meeker School Board Tuesday and will take her team on the road this weekend for league games in Hayden and Vail.

MEEKER I The Meeker Board of Education accepted the resignation of girls’ basketball coach Neil Joy at a special meeting Dec. 29 and named Deb Henderson the new coach at its regular board meeting Jan. 4.

Lady Cowboys win pair, take fifth in Cowboy Shootout

Each year, attending coaches select an all-tournament team for the White River Electric Cowboy Shootout. The 2010 WREA Cowboy Shootout all-tourney team was; Rangely’s Victoria Phelan, Delanie VeDepo and Erin Koehler, of Hayden, Amelia Sunik of Grand Valley, Palisade’s Olevia Schafer and Kendra Barnes. Amber Farr of Cedaredge is not pictured. Phelan was voted the tournament MVP and Sunik won the three-point contest.

MEEKER I New girls’ basketball coach Neil Joy did not win his first game but he said it was “the most exciting.” The Lady Cowboys lost in the first round but won their next two games and finished fifth in the annual White River Electric Cowboy Shootout.

MHS goes 1-1 at Aspen

MEEKER I The Meeker Cow-boys boys’ basketball team lost a game, and won a game in the past weekends Aspen Tournament. Meeker opened their 2010-2011 season against perennial 3A power Aspen High School. Last year Aspen placed second in state 3A classification losing in the final game of the year to Faith Christian.

Winter sports season gets underway

RBC I The high school winter sports schedules start tonight and middle school boys’ basketball champions will be crowned this Saturday. Both Rio Blanco County girls’ basketball teams will open their seasons today in Meeker, competing in the White River Electric Cowboy Shootout.

Meeker High School seniors Chanler May, Denee Chintala, Laura Glass, Ellissa McLaughlin, Becca de Vergie and Tina Bain, will open their final season tonight against Cedaredge, in the 11th annual White River Electric Cowboy Shootout. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

RBC I Both ends of the county were well represented at last weekend’s all-state basketball games. Stacey Fitzgibbons, who was recently graduated from Meeker High School, and Patrick Phelan, who was graduated from Rangely Senior High, both participated in the all-state games.
