Meeker gridders lose 22-16 to ‘physical’ Paonia team

The Cowboys lost 22-16 but not for lack of effort, including running back T.J. Shelton flying across the goal line and out of the end zone backwards.

MEEKER I “The fans got their money’s worth, I believe,” Meeker High School head football coach Shane Phelan said of the game between the Cowboys and the Paonia Eagles in Starbuck Stadium on Friday, which Meeker lost 22-16.

Cowboy gridders drub Leadville, play top team Friday

MEEKER I After a 50-8 defeat of the Leadville Panthers, the Meeker Cowboy football team remains undefeated in five games. However, they will put it on the line Friday in Starbuck Stadium as they host the defending state champion Paonia Eagles.

Cowboys slay the Dragons, advance to No. 3 in Colorado

Coach’s team captures golf classic; Cowboy gridders play host to Rye

Jake Shelton uses a baseball bat to swing at a golf ball off the No. 1 tee box at the Meeker Golf Course, site of the 10th annual Cowboy Kickoff Classic golf tournament, a fundraiser for the MHS football program. The Cowboys will host the Rye Thunderbolts Saturday in Starbuck Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

MEEKER I The Meeker High School football team had two-a-days last week, then Saturday it hosted the 10th annual Cowboy Kickoff Classic golf tournament. This Saturday it will host Rye in Starbuck Stadium in the first football game of the season.

Cowboys preparing for upcoming football season

With music blasting from the speakers in Starbuck Stadium, Meeker High School players warm up with a passing drill Monday. Many players have been gathering on their home field on Mondays and Thursdays all summer in preparation of the upcoming season. Practice officially starts Aug. 11 and the annual Cowboys Kickoff Classic golf tournament will be played Aug. 16.

Meeker High School football players Willis Begaye, J.C. Henderson, Jake Phelan, T.J. Shelton, Joe Newman, Tristin Pelloni and Raul Lopez were recently honored by Northwest League coaches. Henderson, Phelan and Shelton were named to the All-Conference first team and the others were honorably mentioned for their play.
