MHS Cowboy football team takes opener 27-0

The Meeker High School football team kicked off the 2012 season at home in Starbuck Stadium last Friday and defeated Grand Junction Central’s JV team 27-0. The Cowboys will host Grand Valley’s JV team this Friday starting at 7 p.m.

MEEKER I The 2012 Cowboys opened the season with a 27-0 victory over the visiting Grand Junction J.V. team. The Black and Gold were led by a defense that played exceptionaly well, limiting the opponent to only 24 yards total offense and four first downs.

Cowboy football starts Friday

The Meeker High School football team will have played two games before class bells ring for the first time. Game one will be this Friday at 7 p.m. when the Cowboys start their second season under head coach Ron Dupree by hosting Grand Junction Central’s JV team in Starbuck Stadium.

MEEKER I The 2012 football season begins Friday night when the Cowboys host Central High School’s JV team from Grand Junction, a 5-A school.

Ron DuPree of Meeker is this week’s “home of” honoree. Ron moved to Meeker in July 2011 to be the head football coach at Meeker High School.

Meeker High School football seniors Collin Cochran, Aaron Pena, Cooper Smith, Reno Roybal, Ethan Overton, Lani Matai and Charlie Scherbarth were honored at the recently held football banquet for their leadership, dedication and camaraderie with the fans. Head coach Ron Dupree said he always heard compliments about the well-mannered team when on the road and was quoted as saying, “This is a great way to gauge the parents and the community.”

MEEKER I The Meeker Cowboys ended their season on a down note with a loss to the No. 2 rated team in the state. For the fourth year in a row, Hotchkiss beat the ‘boys handily.

Cowboy football coach Ron Dupree was thankful for his new kicker, senior Cooper Smith. Most of Smith’s kickoffs were for touchbacks and he kicked two field goals (one for 38 yards and another for 42 yards).

RBC I Meeker found a new way to put the ball on the ground Friday night and lost their homecoming game 6-24. In a game that was close up until the middle of the fourth quarter, the Black and Gold again came up short.
