Cowboys finish third in Paonia, crown 2 champs

MEEKER I The Meeker High School wrestling team finished third in the Screamin’ Eagle tournament Saturday in Paonia, then pinned the Bulldogs seven times to win a dual in Craig on Tuesday. Tonight the Cowboys will wrestle a triangular in Palisade against the host Bulldogs and the Bulldogs from Hotchkiss.

Cowboys lose to Eagles, win Vern Rose tournament

The Meeker High School wrestling team was supported by a full gymnasium Friday to watch the No. 2-ranked Cowboys wrestle the defending state champion and No. 1-ranked Paonia Eagles. Meeker lost the dual 51-17 but won the first annual Vern Rose Memorial wrestling tournament in Rangely the next day.

Wrestling team hosts defending state champs

Meeker senior J.C. Henderson wrestled eight matches in the Tournament of Champions, winning five and placing eighth at 138. Henderson is pictured defeating his opponent from Grand Valley 16-2.

MEEKER I The Meeker Cowboy wrestling team appreciated the crowd support in their first home dual of the season and are hoping for more crowd support Friday when the defending state champion Paonia Eagles come to town.

Cowboys win West Grand Tournament, again

The Meeker Cowboy wrestling team, above, defending its team title at the West Grand Mustang tournament in Kremmling, dominated the competition and returned with 10 top-four placers, included four champions and the tournament’s outstanding wrestler. Wrestling for the Cowboys this season are: Sheridan Harvey and Calvin Shepherd, holding the championship plaque, with Tristin Pelloni, Josh Cochran, Dillan Frantz and Devon Pontine, also with one knee down. In back are: volunteer assistant coach Carl Padilla, Anthony Watt, T.J. Shelton, Jake Henderson, Nick Burri, Casey Turner, Willis Begaye, assistant coach Barney LeBlanc, behind, and Chase Rule. Shelton: 1st MHS freshman to win state wrestling title

Twelve wrestlers from Rio Blanco County competed in the 2013 Colorado State Wrestling Championships in the Pepsi Center in Denver and they returned with one state champion and three state placers. Rio Blanco County was best represented in the 160-pound bracket where Rangely senior Colton Coombs earned a sixth place finish and Meeker freshman T.J. Shelton won the gold medal.

MEEKER I The Meeker wrestling program has produced 55 state champions, the fifth most of any Colorado high school. MHS qualifies 8 for show

Cowboy senior J.R. Crawford scores back points in a regional tournament match last weekend in Grand Junction. Crawford finished third in the 170-pound bracket and qualified for the state wrestling tournament for a second time. Crawford and seven teammates will compete in the Colorado State Wrestling Championships, which starts today in the Pepsi Center at 3 p.m.
