Town of Meeker is debt-free

MEEKER I As of January 2012, the Town of Meeker is officially debt-free. The town made its final payment on a debt incurred in the 1970s for the town’s water system.
Ken Coffin, Blanco District Ranger for the U.S. Forest Service, presented an update on the district’s activities.
Thanks to funds received from the federal government, the Forest Service will be able to fund, improvements to roads that access national forests, including Marvine, CR 10 on Yellow Jacket and South Fork, and some weed control projects.
“Those are the projects that will be completed this summer. We worked really close with the county, especially with Kai Turner, to get this done,” Coffin said.
Coffin also spoke to the board about the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree, which will be selected from the Blanco Ranger District this year.
“Meeker is kind of going to be the epicenter of activity when it comes to the Capitol Christmas Tree next year,” he said.
“What it entails is getting a tree, some ornaments, and some smaller companion trees for Washington. The ornaments will come from all over the state, but will all be handled through Meeker. Once the tree is cut, it will be brought to town. I want to see us have a really big shindig around this thing.”
“I could see something like the 4th of July celebration happening around this,” Coffin added.
The tree will be harvested shortly after the election in November.
Tom Kilduff with the V.F.W. requested a waiver of the $88 mechanical permit fee for the renovation of the bathrooms on Sixth Street on the basis of the V.F.W. being a non-profit organization. According to Kilduff, the building is undergoing a complete renovation and will be reopened as a “place where folks can come and have a drink.” The new bar will be operated by a private individual.
“The V.F.W. doesn’t have anything to do with the bar. We meet at Kilowatt Korner and operate as the landlord,” Kilduff said.
