RANGELY I Rangely Boy Scout Troop 189 — The Stripling Warriors — traveled to Sylvan Lake State Park 15 miles south of Eagle, Colo. on Feb. 11 to participate in the Three Rivers District Klondike Derby.
Troy Allred, Braxton Bishop and Brodie Nielsen competed in the 14 and under division while Landon Wardell joined up with Venture Crew 225 — The Wereducks — from Glenwood. Evidently, wereducks are like werewolves, except with feathers and bills.
The Stripling Warriors took first in the flint and steel fire building, second in first aid, sled judging, and the obstacle course, and third in knot tying. They were barely edged out of the overall championship by Troop 188 which has won three years in a row.
There was only one award given to the Venture Crew and that was for the overall average score. They did well in the fire building and took second in the 50 yard sled race.
The boys were required to make their own snowshoes and sled. Thanks to John Hume for donating supplies to make this possible. Also thanks to Preston and Max Stewart for donating the skis we used on the sled.
This is a great program that builds and demonstrates character. These young men did extremely well and showed exceptional character all through the day, competing against larger troops and still performing well.
