Turner submits resignation as Meeker High activities director

MEEKER — Coley Turner decided he’s ready to move outdoors.
Turner, Meeker High School’s activities director and physical education teacher, submitted his resignation at a school board meeting March 3.
“I am going to work on a ranch,” Turner said. “I’ve been sitting in a classroom long enough. I’ve always enjoyed ranching. I’ve worked on ranches in the summertime.”
Turner will work for local ranchers Lowell and Lenny Klinglesmith.
“I’m going to try something different,” said Turner, who previously was the high school’s industrial arts teacher, and for the past three years has been activities director.
“This district has been good to me,” Turner said. “It’s been a lot of fun.”
Mary Strang, Meeker School Board president, said of Turner, “We wish him well in his new endeavors, and thank him for his years of dedicated service to kids.”
Turner’s resignation takes effect May 1.
“It’s a busy time for them (the Klinglesmiths),” Turner said. “And it works out better for the school. They can have a long-term sub, and all of my AD stuff will be done. It will be an easy transition.”
Also at its meeting last week, the board reviewed its facilities use policy.
“A new application form is being developed to be used by all organizations, groups and individuals wanting to use the (district’s) facilities, including the rec district,” Strang said. “The school district encourages public use of its facilities, and through these revisions, hopes to add clarity to the process.”
n The board approved a contract with Colorado Hazard Control for asbestos abatement in the high school and middle school buildings, prior to starting construction work as part of the bond project.
“All of the high school and middle school projects will be completed by the beginning of school this fall,” Strang said.
n The board approved a contract with Pat Hughes to do additional work on the new practice field at Barone Middle School. The project was started last summer. Most of the work has been funded by a grant from the Denver Broncos.
n The board thanked Justin Regina for serving as announcer at the Meeker High School boys’ and girls’ basketball home games, as well as the district tournament Feb. 27 and 28, hosted by MHS.
