Up and Down El Rio Blanco: Christmas in July

Thanks goes to Mary Ann Wilber and Connie Theos, who served as co-presidents for the 2012 Rio Blanco County Pioneers Association’s Old Timers Reunion Dinner and Dance centennial celebration last Saturday. The co-presidents and many other volunteers pulled off a successful event which is quite an accomplishment for the 100th time, congratulations and thanks for the fun time!
It takes perseverance to continue a tradition for more than 100 years, especially an all-volunteer event like the Range Call Celebration, which will begin its 127th year of entertainment starting July 4. I’m sure many volunteers will be needed for the five-day celebration featuring rodeos, the parade, 5K run/walk, barbecues, live music, barn dances, fireworks, the Shoot Jennings concert and the first annual White River OHV Rendezvous which has been added to the schedule of events.

Katie Stewart’s presentation of Meeker’s sales tax leakage problem was informative and useful. According to Stewart’s research, for which she earned a master’s degree, there are 1,013 Meeker residential households and a survey of more than 300 revealed more than 50 percent of them shop out of town on a frequent basis, creating a sales tax leakage of more than one million dollars.
One recommendation made by Stewart was for businesses to inform customers of their goods and services through advertising and the Herald Times would like to offer an advertising rate on two sizes of display ads we usually only offer during Christmas.
