RBC I Veterans have recently contacted staff at the Grand Junction Veterans Affairs Medical Center to report attempts to get their personal information by phone. Veterans said they received the calls in the evening from someone claiming to be with the VA who needed to confirm their contact information, social security number and bank account.
The VA Medical Center staff does not ask for this information when contacting a veteran.
When a veteran calls the medical center, staff may ask the veteran to confirm certain information before discussing medical information. This is to ensure the caller is the veteran and to protect the veteran’s privacy.
Veterans who believe they have been targeted for identify theft or a scam should report the attempt to the Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General using the OIG hotline at 1-800-488-8244 or by sending a fax to 202-565-7936 or by e-mailing [email protected]
