MEEKER I Voters will have to go to the Meeker Fire Department station on 7th Street on Tuesday to cast their ballots for three contested seats on the Meeker Fire District Board of Directors.
Voters will be deciding between six candidates looking to fill three seats on the board in the first contested election in several years. The fire station will serve as the sole polling place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Three of the six candidates are incumbents: Doug Overton, who is the owner/manager of Northwest Auto and who has served on the board for many years, was a volunteer chief for 10 years and a member of the fire department for 22 years; Sherri Halandras, a former emergency medical services worker and now a registered nurse in the emergency room department of Grand River Hospital in Rifle and who has served on the board for four years; and Rick Dodds, a supervisor with Moody Construction who has served a little less than two years, appointed to fill an open position in May of 2014.
The challengers for the three open slots are: Jamie Cogswell, a licensed home daycare owner; David Luzmoor, a retired chemical plant manager; and David Cole, a retired commercial airline pilot and now an aviation consultant as well as commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Meeker.
Just for your information, it is the “Rio Blanco Fire Protection District”, not the Meeker Fire District Board. I realize a couple of the candidates have been calling it that for a while now, but it is incorrect.
